Oranienburgerstrasse, Berlin

4.2
#206 of 842 in Things to do in Berlin
Oranienburgerstrasse, the former center of Jewish life in Berlin, is now known for its restaurants and lively night scene. Walk through the streets to admire street art and people-watch; stop into a wide variety of shops, restaurants, and bars; or try the Kunsthaus Tacheles, an alternative art center and nightclub. Visit the New Synagogue, famous for being saved during Kristallnacht, or one of the many other Jewish landmarks. Several hotels and hostels provide overnight accommodations. The street is also known for its prominent, legal prostitution at night--something to keep in mind if you're traveling with children. I'd never gone on purpose, but because I was invited and we were in the area, I accepted this challenge not just in my comfort zone, for a tour in the Centre of Berlin, in what was the eastern part of the city at the time of the wall. And to be honest it was the only thing that attracted me, noticing the huge difference than when paths that area when the wall still divides the city in two. Unrecognizable! I saw, but only from the outside given the late hour, the synagogue and what was once the heart of Jewish life. The road is striking for a continuous alternation between palaces semicadenti, typical of the Communist era and as I remember East Berlin, and sometimes excessive consumerism, the metropolis that did not suffer any restriction regime. But maybe that's the charm of this pathway so varied and uneven.

Where to stay in Berlin

The Kreuzberg neighborhood near the Oberbaumbrüke bridge is central and full of Berlin icons: street art, a piece of the Berlin Wall, the East Side Gallery, and a proliferation of cafes. Friedrichshain is another option with a hip vibe due to the students who congregate at its cafes and galleries. Consider Mitte as a historic home base. Mitte is the area where almost all of Berlin's well-known buildings are located, and it is within walking distance of Alexanderplatz. For a peaceful residential area, try Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf where the streets are lined with boutiques and quiet coffee shops.
