  • I visited this museum with my wife and her childhood friend, both of whom grew up in the GDR. They both confessed that they were full of mixed emotions, reminiscing about the simplicity of their child...  more »
  • An interesting free museum that illustrates the GDR. Unfortunately, we have seen the audio at the output. The visit is much more difficult in a language other than the french...

  • On my second visit in the Group and with a professionally trained Guide, the Museum to life in the GDR in a new way has been presented. Actually issued stations to report more about everyday life, if they are represented. But the true life in the GDR had a different style than what you can find here. When represented in the holiday culture in close-up, where romance the Naturist? Or the little things of daily life? I found many of them in small Eastern stores in the neighborhood. Here, a lot can be improved significantly. Well suited for a first introduction to the topic.

  • Perfect museum if you want to learn about all aspects of life and work in DDR. Much detailed than DDR Museum, goes deep in explaining. It's free and open on Sunday, be early to avoid crowds and listen to videos, voice recordings as much as you want. They're both in German and English (subtitles).
  • One of the very good free museum of Berlin. It is located, in a remote part of the ex-eastern Berlin. Like most museums in Berlin, they kind of forget the tourists in terms of translations. Most but not all of the explanations are in English and the rest in German. However, they have made an instructive, playful and original museum. You will learn a lot about all the aspects of the daily life of eastern Germans. The building in itself (former brewery) is also interesting. Put this on your to do list.
  • Small but excellent, striking and (still) shocking (for me). That this was what it was like. For so long. Very practically illustrated. Impressive, to witness this.
  • Museum about the life and organization in East-Berlin after WW2. Touching, but not very interactive.
  • This museum is home to the permanent exhibition "Alltag in der DDR" ("Daily life in the GDR") and certainly worth a visit. You'll get a taste of how the state operated, for example how they determined when and where a family was going to have their holidays, and how the holiday site management had to teach children about all the achievements of the communist party. Interesting stuff.

Where to stay in Berlin

The Kreuzberg neighborhood near the Oberbaumbrüke bridge is central and full of Berlin icons: street art, a piece of the Berlin Wall, the East Side Gallery, and a proliferation of cafes. Friedrichshain is another option with a hip vibe due to the students who congregate at its cafes and galleries. Consider Mitte as a historic home base. Mitte is the area where almost all of Berlin's well-known buildings are located, and it is within walking distance of Alexanderplatz. For a peaceful residential area, try Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf where the streets are lined with boutiques and quiet coffee shops.
