Mauerpark, Berlin

4.2
#4 of 35 in Parks in Berlin
Nature / Park
Established by city officials as a green space after the fall of the Berlin Wall, Mauerpark contains a piece of the former barrier between East and West Germany. Take a walk past traces of the Wall from Behmstrasse along Norwegerstrasste toward Bornholmer Strasse. You can also see remnants while walking along Bernhauser Strasse from Eberswalder Strasse in the direction of the Berlin Wall Memorial. At the memorial, peruse the flea market for vinyl records, East German memorabilia, or new and vintage fashion. • OK this might sound a bit strange, but alongside a visit to the Jewish Museum, spending Sunday at Mauerpark was the highlight of my 4-day visit to Berlin. If you like popular music, this is NOT TO BE ...  more »

  • The Sunday flee market is a must see while in Berlin. Very crowded, so be patient. The outdoor karaoke and various street art performances in the amphitheater is highly entertaining! Occasionally a place for other events like the Red Bull Music Academy which is worth a look.
  • This Berlin Wall ran through here. It's a great place to visit on any trip to see the historic devised Berlin. On Sunday there's a huge open air market here full of 1930's - 80's memorobelia. I filled my apartment with mid-century modernist furniture I found here.
  • It is worth going to atleast once. I go regularly. So many unique and beautiful products for sell by local artists. Great street food. There are amazing musicians always playing too. Down side...if you don't smoke, like myself, the smoke can be unpleasant. Not just cigarette and hooka, but many people BBQ on the lawn also.
  • It's one of the cultural hotspots of Berlin. Besides the historical Berliner Mauer (Berlin Wall) close by, the park offers amazing entertainment, one of the biggest flee markets and food options on Sundays. There is also always some or other live performance on Sundays. A must visit place for tourists and a place to spend time as well as get rid of old furniture and buy amazing hand made stuff like fashion accessories.
  • Flea markets on Sunday are a must see. Bands pop up around the park offering live music (better or worse, but always full of energy). Great place to go for an afternoon. People even sell beer.

Where to stay in Berlin

The Kreuzberg neighborhood near the Oberbaumbrüke bridge is central and full of Berlin icons: street art, a piece of the Berlin Wall, the East Side Gallery, and a proliferation of cafes. Friedrichshain is another option with a hip vibe due to the students who congregate at its cafes and galleries. Consider Mitte as a historic home base. Mitte is the area where almost all of Berlin's well-known buildings are located, and it is within walking distance of Alexanderplatz. For a peaceful residential area, try Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf where the streets are lined with boutiques and quiet coffee shops.
