Mauermuseum - Museum Haus am Checkpoint Charlie, Berlin

Historic Site · Landmark
Mauermuseum - Museum Haus am Checkpoint Charlie was German's only Cold War border crossing that permitted foreigners to pass through between 1961 and 1990. Though it once represented the separation of East and West Germany, this spot is now just one of the city's many tourist attractions. The checkpoint achieved mythological status because residents of the city were not allowed to use it. Look for the famous "You Are Now Leaving the American Sector" sign. This iconic marker of the past is one of the most photographed spots in the city. Nearby, you can explore the exhibits of a private museum dedicated to the checkpoint and various Berlin Wall memorabilia. • This is a definite must see when in Berlin especially if you have military family. The history of this area is real.  more »
  • Historic place but no so atmospheric as it was when we first saw it in 1991. Also, where is that amazing Chinese restaurant that was on the corner, 1st floor?  more »
  • Just a hut in the middle of the road--but it must be the most famous shed in the world. Therefore worth a visit. There is an underground station a minute away. It is steeped in modern history and...  more »
  • Detailed history. Curatorial vision gets a bit jumbled on top floor with a wide cross section of human rights issues, but powerful stories about the Wall. Jam packed displays due to multi-lingual presentation (I remember English, French, German, and possibly others)
  • One could spend all day in here to really read everything and take in the true impact of the stories and the emotions that fueled them. You've been warned, if you don't like to read or not a fan of history, give this a miss. But if you do have the time and patience and are in search of Cold War history, my friend you CANNOT miss this and please give it the time it deserves. Absolutely AMAZING stories of human courage, ingenuity, and perseverance. Much thanks to its founder, R.I.P.
  • This museum is worth a look if you're in the area. Historical information is good and there are lots of great stories and actual apparatus from heroic crossings from the East. Lots of steps and not easy access for those with a mobility issue.
  • Amazing bit of history! the kids and I loved this experience, and we got historic bite sizes which were easy to digest! highly recommend it.
  • I really enjoyed this museum. The exhibition provided a very comprehensive view of Germany’s modern history. The stories of people during the Soviet occupation were all very interesting. It was well worth the visit.
