Mauermuseum - Museum Haus am Checkpoint Charlie, Berlin

(2.1/5 based on 8,000+ reviews on the web)
Mauermuseum - Museum Haus am Checkpoint Charlie was German's only Cold War border crossing that permitted foreigners to pass through between 1961 and 1990. Though it once represented the separation of East and West Germany, this spot is now just one of the city's many tourist attractions. The checkpoint achieved mythological status because residents of the city were not allowed to use it. Look for the famous "You Are Now Leaving the American Sector" sign. This iconic marker of the past is one of the most photographed spots in the city. Nearby, you can explore the exhibits of a private museum dedicated to the checkpoint and various Berlin Wall memorabilia. • Is the wall Museum at Checkpoint Charlie is an important place of remembrance, but also too much commercialism admits on his doorstep.

  • I wasn't expecting much looking at some of the bad reviews. It's a bit run down. However it's very interesting. Lots of reading with each photo could take you days. But the stories of ingenuity trying to escape are amazing. A few cars there with modified hide places are fascinating to see. Even a few home made microlites!
  • Great museum, definitely worth the entry cost. The museum is much larger than you would think standing outside and it is packed with information. A must do in Berlin!
  • Very interesting museum, visited multiple times and always take people here whenever I am in town. Quit crowdy now but for a reason, I remember the museum in quieter time, in the middle of nowhere. Love it, not to be missed when visiting Berlin as a tourist.
  • Information overload if you try to see everything, not that well curated nor in a logical order, but if you just go through and look at the escape artifacts and their stories it's good. If you have an interest in modern European history and no prior knowledge, you could spend all day in there just reading. Bring your reading glasses as the print is sometimes quite small.
  • Some nice stories and exhibits although there is no order to the place at all. It is a little overpriced and the extra two Euros for the photo pass is a bit harsh. My main niggle though is just the sheer amount of written text on the walls. Information is good, but I'd rather sit down at home with a book to go into this much detail. I still think it's worth a visit though just for the personal stories and exhibits that connect with them!!
