Where to stay in Berlin

The Kreuzberg neighborhood near the Oberbaumbrüke bridge is central and full of Berlin icons: street art, a piece of the Berlin Wall, the East Side Gallery, and a proliferation of cafes. Friedrichshain is another option with a hip vibe due to the students who congregate at its cafes and galleries. Consider Mitte as a historic home base. Mitte is the area where almost all of Berlin's well-known buildings are located, and it is within walking distance of Alexanderplatz. For a peaceful residential area, try Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf where the streets are lined with boutiques and quiet coffee shops.

  • Fascinating to realize that during the book-burning of 1933, that many of Engel's and Marx's books were burned on Babelplatz in Berlin as un-German influences. These huge statures appear stoic and stu...  more »
  • The Marx-Engels-Forum is worth a quick stop if you are in the area. Directly across from the Radisson Blu Hotel, these statues are interesting. I wonder what these guys would say today about modern Ge...  more »
  • The statue of Marx and Engels is an enjoyable stop, there are benches nearby and a quieter atmosphere than the surrounding city centre. Good to sit down for lunch and take in some good old communism.  more »

  • The sculptures themselves are in good condition, but the ground around them looks unpaved and muddy (I only know there's pavement under there from seeing other pictures). It's dismaying to see so many stickers on the surrounding artwork. I hope this place looks nicer in the spring when it's dry, but right now it's quite dreary.
  • It's just a park with a statue of Marx and Engels but it's symbolic.
  • Nice statues but nothing more. Could be nice for selfie tourists.
  • Don't forget to visit Marx and Engels during your stay in Berlin. Two of the most important thinkers of the Communist Revolution and the modern history.
  • I enjoyed this place!
