Grunewald Forest, Berlin

(4.3/5 based on 55+ reviews on the web)
A sprawling, forested area in the western part of the city, Grunewald Forest is a paradise of greenery and peace that attracts strollers, bikers, and picnickers. Rich in lakes and ponds, the forest covers about 3,000 hectares (7,400 acres), offering sweeping views of the surrounding urban areas from its tallest point, the 117 m (384 ft) high Taufelsberg Hill. Named after one of the oldest remaining royal palaces in the city, the forest was one of the favorite stomping grounds of the Prussian rulers, who started hunting in the area in the early 16th century. Returned to its former glory after extensive restoration efforts, the palace is now filled with old furniture and works of art, with a small exhibit on royal hunts open to the public. • Diverse as the Grunewald, it is hardly to see "Mountains" and very much forest and Lakes very much. The Grunewald starts on the Wannsee and goes along the West side of Berlin, it is intersected by the AVUS also by public transport, on foot, to reach by car and bicycle, you should have swimsuit this summer. The Grunewald offers everything, perhaps on mobile reception at the one or the other point, so no go.

  • A very scenic area in the outskirts of Berlin, we went out there in absolutely pouring rain, but it didn't do anything. Beautiful hardwood, large lakes, very classy. The area is large, so the abandoned Nato station we saw not. But deep in the forest is a woodland cemetery where singer of the Velvet Underground, Nico (Christa Päffgen) is buried. The most beautiful and greenest cemetery I've seen. Plenty of traces of wild boar in the Woods!
