Grunewald Forest, Berlin

4.4
#3 of 6 in Nature in Berlin
A sprawling, forested area in the western part of the city, Grunewald Forest is a paradise of greenery and peace that attracts strollers, bikers, and picnickers. Rich in lakes and ponds, the forest covers about 3,000 hectares (7,400 acres), offering sweeping views of the surrounding urban areas from its tallest point, the 117 m (384 ft) high Taufelsberg Hill. Named after one of the oldest remaining royal palaces in the city, the forest was one of the favorite stomping grounds of the Prussian rulers, who started hunting in the area in the early 16th century. Returned to its former glory after extensive restoration efforts, the palace is now filled with old furniture and works of art, with a small exhibit on royal hunts open to the public. The Grunewald is the recreation area of Berlin. Here you can wonderfully stroll, Baden, in one of the lakes or swimming in the river Havel and there are enough routes for cycling. At even the access highway is locked and only accessible by cyclists, like today, Avus what thousands of bikers take advantage for themselves. We prefer the walk to the Grunewaldturm, from where there is a magnificent view on the Green and on the Havel.

Lovely forest with some decent hills to climb - great for both hiking and biking, with lots of alternatives depending on your fitness level. You may stumble across nudists if you hike to the lake. Not...  more »

Where to stay in Berlin

The Kreuzberg neighborhood near the Oberbaumbrüke bridge is central and full of Berlin icons: street art, a piece of the Berlin Wall, the East Side Gallery, and a proliferation of cafes. Friedrichshain is another option with a hip vibe due to the students who congregate at its cafes and galleries. Consider Mitte as a historic home base. Mitte is the area where almost all of Berlin's well-known buildings are located, and it is within walking distance of Alexanderplatz. For a peaceful residential area, try Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf where the streets are lined with boutiques and quiet coffee shops.
