Gropius Bau, Berlin

4.2
#33 of 168 in Museums in Berlin
Standing in the center of Berlin, Gropius Bau was designed by Heino Schmeiden and Martin Gropius, the great uncle of Walter Gropius, founder of the Bauhaus movement. Built between 1877 and 1881 in a classically inspired neo-Renaissance style, the building stands alongside a piece of the Berlin Wall. It now houses contemporary art collections and serves as a major international exhibition and event venue. More than 20 large-scale art, photography, and anthropological exhibits stop here every year--past exhibits have focused on Native American tribes, Frida Kahlo, and Anish Kapoor. The high-ceilinged cafe is a good place to stop for refreshments. In warm weather, you can eat outside in the garden. Planning Berlin trip won't be overwheling when you use's Insprock itinerary maker.

  • Looks great from the outside but hit and miss on what they may have on exhibit at any point in time. So check online in advance.  more »

  • One of the most beautiful places in Berlin. This building is full of energy due to the history there. Recommended to read something about before you go, so you can pay attention to details. Nice. 👌
  • I wasn't really impressed by the Luther Effekt exhibition as they missed out on so much stuff about Protestantism in Europe that they could have easily included. By far the best part of the exhibit was a small section about the German colonies in Africa... as you so rarely see photos or find footage anywhere else... and it's so rarely talked about. The rest of it I didn't really enjoy... except for a few rare books and wooden wall hangings from German churches. I didn't understand the centrepieces relevance and thought it was a shame photos weren't allowed ads there are plenty of protestants around the world that would have liked to have viewed this exhibit online. ... since they won't get to Berlin to see it. Shame.
  • I attend a film trade event at this museum every year so I have never actually visited the collection at the museum, however beyond the riff Raff of advertising in the walls of this magnificent building are skin and bones that make it the wonder if German architecture that it is. Will a towering central court and swooping balconies and lover of architecture should visit this palace. Across the street is the German Senate and next to the MGB is the Topography of Horrors, as the Nazis had great taste in architecture and used the MGB as the main headquarters for the SS.
  • Love this place! I’m a Berliner myself and this is one of my favorite museums in Berlin. The exhibitions change quite frequently, but there is something interesting for everyone. The Franz Kafka exhibit was one of my favorite in the past week and I warmly recommend it.
  • The centre of the Market during the Berlinale. A wonderful place.
