Gedenkstaette Berlin-Hohenschoenhausen, Berlin

4.6
Discover the polemic history of the German Democratic Republic at Gedenkstaette Berlin-Hohenschoenhausen. Formed in the early 1990s by former inmates, the prison now serves as a museum and memorial. You'll get a glimpse here at the lives and happenings of those incarcerated. Take a tour through the prison to see the prison cells and interrogation rooms. This way, you'll learn more about the history of the complex and the Stasi. Former inmates who give first-hand accounts of the prison's history lead most of the tours. Be sure to check online for English-language tour times. Gedenkstaette Berlin-Hohenschoenhausen is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our custom trip planner, Berlin Edition.

  • I have been to this museum twice. The first on a school trip in 2014: as a group we had booked the guide in Italian. The guide was a woman who was herself a prisoner in those cells. His personal experience combined with the atrocities which were committed between those walls made us all go out with a bit of angst on him and made us remain silent for some time (which is rare for the 16-year-olds). Last year (2016) I returned to Berlin and I wanted to take my boyfriend here. Being only two of the guide was in English (about 25 years old boy) and so there were no personal comments in his stories, but I found both very capable of conveying all their knowledge. Also the guy did references to stories told by his colleagues who had been imprisoned there. Every day we get 2 or 3 tours in English and one in German. Obviously if you are a group Board to book early and request the guide in Italian. For students there is discount (€3 instead of €6) recommend a visit here, you will come out a little more distressed, but richer.

  • Impressive! Here, you could see how was dealt in the GDR with prisoners. Shockingly the cells and interrogation rooms

  • The place is exciting, full of history and very well preserved. The tour lasts about 2 hours and there for his money, the guide was very friendly, and his understandable English even though a correct level is recommended. In addition, the visit to the Museum is free with french audio guide included, tracing the history of the prison and to serve as a complement to better understand what escaped us during the visit in English. Don't miss under any pretext.

  • Remarkable sense of history but one that is still relevant and highlights the German question. Amazing sense of humility. Well worth a visit. Contemporary tour guide highly recommend.
  • Very impressive location with alot of original cells. We had a very good tour from a very Nice young woman. Would strongly recommend to visit when in Berlin since its by far the most interesting place in Berlin.
  • Highly recommended. If you are a native, try to check out the tours with a contemporary witness. Chilling to the bones
  • Definitely a place to visit. The guides provide interesting insights, also people who were taken to Hohenschönhausen work at the place so their stories are told by the guide or themselves.
  • I think, one of the must visit in Berlin. Tour tooks over 2 hours, but was really worth.

Where to stay in Berlin

The Kreuzberg neighborhood near the Oberbaumbrüke bridge is central and full of Berlin icons: street art, a piece of the Berlin Wall, the East Side Gallery, and a proliferation of cafes. Friedrichshain is another option with a hip vibe due to the students who congregate at its cafes and galleries. Consider Mitte as a historic home base. Mitte is the area where almost all of Berlin's well-known buildings are located, and it is within walking distance of Alexanderplatz. For a peaceful residential area, try Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf where the streets are lined with boutiques and quiet coffee shops.
