Galeries Lafayette Berlin, Berlin

#15 of 77 in Shopping in Berlin
Get a taste of France in the heart of Germany at Galeries Lafayette Berlin, modeled after the original French department store in Paris. Though it was built in 1996 with a modern air, it is somewhat smaller, yet still manages to capture some of the same Parisian charm. Browse the many shops with mid- to high-end brands, and enjoy some French culinary specialties in the food hall beneath the stores. Check online for events like readings or wine tastings. If you like good shopping do not miss Galeries Lafayette. Prices are expensive but if you look for sales you can usually find them. Food area is a must visit at the basement.  more »

Everything you need and more in this store. All very good quality. Happened to be a 50% off sale on a selection of handbags and purses. Mixture of resonable and rather expensive things, but something ...  more »

The Galeries Lafayette are great when it comes to French food. Cheese, pies etc. In fashion, there are also a good choice, but everything very high-priced and in much of French mini sizes. Caution! Otherwise, the shop has come somewhat in the years. The glass elevator is beyond repair, is inadequately cleaned toilets, looks very worn out. That's a shame. It is worth to stop by from time to time.

  • One of few places in Berlin where you can do really good grocery shopping. Most things are from France, so if you are bored with German tastes, it offers very interesting alternatives. Seafood there is really gourmet
  • Nice place for shopping. For global Travellers, it has its own global tax free counter. You can claim your money back there.
  • It's no Paris, and neither is the service. But it is spectacular and has a wide assortment of designer clothing and bags. But for me, KaDeWe has the better selection and more prestige. But this place has an impressive food hall and they put on damn good parties!
  • Lots of great products but high prices. Walking a few blocks away and the price for the same kinds of products drop 50%.
  • Excellent service and selection inside the store. While no where near the size of the Paris flagship, this location is fairly large and has a lot of brands and a food hall inside

Where to stay in Berlin

The Kreuzberg neighborhood near the Oberbaumbrüke bridge is central and full of Berlin icons: street art, a piece of the Berlin Wall, the East Side Gallery, and a proliferation of cafes. Friedrichshain is another option with a hip vibe due to the students who congregate at its cafes and galleries. Consider Mitte as a historic home base. Mitte is the area where almost all of Berlin's well-known buildings are located, and it is within walking distance of Alexanderplatz. For a peaceful residential area, try Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf where the streets are lined with boutiques and quiet coffee shops.
