Friedrichswerder Church (Friedrichswerdersche Kirche), Berlin

4.0
#32 of 48 in Historic Sites in Berlin
Religious Site Historic Site
The first Neo-Gothic church ever built in Berlin, Friedrichswerder Church (Friedrichswerdersche Kirche) holds a large collection of sculptures created by German artists in the 19th century. Designed by architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel, the commanding church serves as a gallery showing works of Daniel Rauch and Gottfried Schadow. The upper floor houses a permanent exhibit dedicated to the life and career of Schinkel, who not only designed buildings, but also furniture and stage sets. Bombed during World War II and subsequently repaired, the building remains an outstanding example of Schinkel's architectural achievement. Organ concerts are sometimes held in the evenings. Note that reconstruction in recent years has sometimes limited access to the site. Where to stay in Berlin

The Kreuzberg neighborhood near the Oberbaumbrüke bridge is central and full of Berlin icons: street art, a piece of the Berlin Wall, the East Side Gallery, and a proliferation of cafes. Friedrichshain is another option with a hip vibe due to the students who congregate at its cafes and galleries. Consider Mitte as a historic home base. Mitte is the area where almost all of Berlin's well-known buildings are located, and it is within walking distance of Alexanderplatz. For a peaceful residential area, try Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf where the streets are lined with boutiques and quiet coffee shops.

  • Locked. A tragic example of how robbed the city of Berlin of its tourist highlights.

  • Acute collapse due to construction work next to the Church. The Western buildings obscure the West façade of the Church already completely. Similar is planned on the East side. A sad example of rücksichtlslose urban planning.
