  • I've seen several shows here over the past few years as I have friends in the orchestra. While the general aesthetic does not align exactly with my own - it's big, bombastic, and glitzy where I prefer more subtle and intimate performances - the quality is definitely high, it's a visual feast (particularly the current show with its Jean Paul Gauthier costumes) with gorgeous lighting and extravagant staging, and the acrobatic performances are top notch. The orchestra sounds great, though it always seems a bit strange not to be able to see them at all. I also didn't get much from the vocal songs, but hey, you can't have everything...
  • We went to see "The One". It was quite nice. You can really see Jean Paul Gaultier on the outfits. The performances were breathtaking. I would have liked to see a bit more of a storyline, though. It is more like just random acts. The seats were good. Even though they were more to the back, the inclination is quite high so no one in front of you blocks your view. I didn't like the fact that we had to pay 1.5 € for each jacket or coat we wanted to leave at the cloakroom.
  • Went there for "the One". Awesome venue. Show was a treat. The staff was very friendly. Sound system during the show was excellent, with live orchestra and singing. Toilets are clean, drinks are not expensive but cost their fair share. Food is fresh and decent.
  • The show was truly a miracle. I watched „The One“ and especially the costumes are fantastic! Very entertaining and full of art. Furthermore there are artistical highlights. Just two points I did not like: - the costumes who are intend to look like nude skin are gorgeous but nude skin should be allowed to be seen - sometimes expressions are missing
  • My expectations where not very high, mostly because I didn't really know what to expect. From the moment we entered the vast building, though, I was impressed. Unlike its hideous outside, the interior of the Friedrichstadtpalast is radiating the type of splendour and style I usually only see in a movie (you notice, I am not a regular theatre or opera fan) When we got into the actual theatre my mouth stayed probably open for a minute - the view of one of the biggest stages on the planet along with stage design is truly breathtaking. Little did I know then, what they were able to do with this monster stage later during the show. The show itself (The One) is hard to describe with a single sentence. It's not a revue, it's not cirque de soleil, it's not a musical - it's all joined together into a tense three hour program. At times I didn't know where to look, so much was going on on the stage. Gaultier's custumes where typical for him and absolutely fabulous - they make for a big part of the show. The artistic pieces where unlike anything I've seen before - spectacular and full of grace. The only thing I do find odd is, that most songs were in German - strange for an otherwise international show and probably audience. Altogether, it was a great experience and absolutely worth the money (it's not cheap)

Where to stay in Berlin

The Kreuzberg neighborhood near the Oberbaumbrüke bridge is central and full of Berlin icons: street art, a piece of the Berlin Wall, the East Side Gallery, and a proliferation of cafes. Friedrichshain is another option with a hip vibe due to the students who congregate at its cafes and galleries. Consider Mitte as a historic home base. Mitte is the area where almost all of Berlin's well-known buildings are located, and it is within walking distance of Alexanderplatz. For a peaceful residential area, try Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf where the streets are lined with boutiques and quiet coffee shops.
