Friedrichshain, Berlin

4.4
#11 of 16 in Neighborhoods in Berlin
Pressed up against the fallen Berlin Wall, Friedrichshain was once home to squatters and artists after the wall fell. Mass evictions cleared these groups out, but the neighborhood continued to thrive as a trendy district and has become a fashionable place to live. On the end of the borough opposite the wall, in the Volkspark Friedrichshain, you'll find a largely landscaped park that houses sites like the Fairytale Fountain, as well as a memorial to Polish and anti-Fascist German soldiers. The main boulevard is lined with shops and beer gardens that fill up on warm afternoons. Don't miss the East Side Gallery, an outdoor art gallery located at the base of a remaining piece of the Berlin Wall. Neighborhood a little hotel but easily accessible by public transport, the people are nice, cheap bars, as well as the many small restaurants in the area. The Berlin wall is not far away, in the same way as the second zoo in the city. It's an atypical neighborhood by population, we recommend to stay there

Where to stay in Berlin

The Kreuzberg neighborhood near the Oberbaumbrüke bridge is central and full of Berlin icons: street art, a piece of the Berlin Wall, the East Side Gallery, and a proliferation of cafes. Friedrichshain is another option with a hip vibe due to the students who congregate at its cafes and galleries. Consider Mitte as a historic home base. Mitte is the area where almost all of Berlin's well-known buildings are located, and it is within walking distance of Alexanderplatz. For a peaceful residential area, try Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf where the streets are lined with boutiques and quiet coffee shops.
