Franzoesischer Dom, Berlin

4.2
Französischer Dom is the colloquial designation for the "French Church of Friedrichstadt" located in Berlin on the Gendarmenmarkt across from the Deutscher Dom, formerly a church of German-speaking congregants.Louis Cayart and Abraham Quesnay built the first parts of the French Church from 1701 to 1705 for the Huguenot community. At that time, Huguenots made up about 25% of Berlin's population. The French Church was modelled after the destroyed Huguenot temple in Charenton-Saint-Maurice, France. In 1785 Carl von Gontard modified the church and built—wall to wall next to it—the domed tower, which, together with the French-speaking congregants, gave the church its name. The domed tower is technically not part of the church, there is no access between church and tower, and both buildings have different proprietors. It was built to embellish the Gendarmenmarkt ensemble at the instigation of Frederick the Great. The Deutscher Dom, however, on the other side of Gendarmenmarkt, consists of church building and tower as an entity.

  • The two domes facing directly at the Gendarmenmarkt and I mix them up regularly, they are separated by the Schauspielhaus. Centrally located, a real gem

  • Every time I come to Berlin, we tried to come to the Gendarmenmarkt square in order to admire the two cathedrals, one of which is the French Cathedral (Französischer Dom). That's 23/02 we have here parent to and they got to the beautiful. ))) French Cathedral was built in 1701 -05 respectively for the Huguenots, as the population of Berlin at that time 25% consisted of the Huguenots. The building is called a cathedral, although there never was the Episcopal Chair. During the second world war, due to the Anglo-American bombings aviation, Franzoesischer Dom was badly damaged, and only through 30 years building began seriously to restore, and for 11 years (from 1977 to 1988), the Cathedral was restored completely in almost its original form. A handsome man.

  • The French cathedral stands in the heart of Berlin Centre halfway between the Brandenburg Gate and the Berlin Cathedral on the Gendarmenmarkt in addition to the concert hall. From the Berlin Cathedral from it is walking in less than four minutes. The French Cathedral is a dome Tower, which was built between 1780 and 1785 to the French Church of Frederick city. It was destroyed in the second world war and rebuilt between 1981 and 1987. Together with the concert hall, the German Cathedral dominates the building sustained the famous square and is well worth a visit. We were excited for the umpteenth time.

  • Beautiful historical building surrounded by newer buildings. The German cathedral, the Gendarmenmarkt and a theatre are nearby too. You definitely don't want to miss this area on your trip through Berlin. The nearby public transportation options are very good.
  • Stately French church dating back to the 17th century featuring a domed tower with sweeping views.
  • Very old and beautiful historical building that is located among newer buildings and it's really amazing to see the diffrences in the building styles in my opinion it worth visiting the place even if you are in a hurry to somewhere as not every day you can see an old building as this one
  • Lovely historic cathedral. For the price and other options in Berlin it's not the most awe-inspiring. If you are touring cathedrals in Berlin then this one is a must, but if you can only see one then this is certainly not it.
  • Absolutely stunning cathedral, breathtaking views over the city for only €3 and well worth the walk up the steps. Highly recommended.
