The French Cathedral is one of 3 remarkable buildings on the Gendarmenmarkt. The style fits in well with the ensemble of the square. Striking high dome Tower, but it was probably wanted by Frederick II. For a visit it was not enough for me. But with everything one reads positive impressions here, I will do that next time.

If you are on the square in front of the Dom runs you imagine yourself in France. Due to time constraints, we are not in the Dom.

The climb to the viewing platform of the French Cathedral definitely worth for 3,-EURO and lots of stairs. The view is phenomenal and gives a fantastic overview of the whole city and the environment. There are benches on which work the views can be in peace.

  • It is a nice place to visit. For classical music - well that depends. The walls don't resonate that well - too much concrete, I guess.
  • The building is beautiful, but I would not advise you to go up to the observation deck - the whole view is blocked by the fence.
  • This beautiful church is nearly identical to the one across from it on Gendarmenmarkt. It was built for French Huguenots to worship after they fled persecution in French and found refuge in Berlin.
  • This is the Französischer Dom, which essentially means The French Cathedral in German. Now, why would there be a French church in a German capital? This is where taking a walking tour is brilliant. Running through a quick history of Prussian, we know that this was built by Frederick II as an admiration of French culture. His father was known as the Soldier-King, which amassed a great Prussian army only to never had used them. Frederick on the other hand, loved culture and the arts but turned out to be the most formidable conqueror and warrior, expanding Prussia’s territory and power. He was dubbed Frederick the Great and Prussia under Frederick is often described as "not a state in possession of an army, but an army in possession of a state." The French Cathedral is located in the beautiful Gendarmenmarkt square which was expanded and made the seat of high culture by Frederick the Great. On this square are two major cathedrals, Französischer and Deutscher Dom as well as Konzerthaus Berlin. That makes this square, one of the prettiest square in Berlin.
  • Gloriously imposing, this French cathedral signifies Berlin's openness to those arriving from other countries. A very popular square.

Where to stay in Berlin

The Kreuzberg neighborhood near the Oberbaumbrüke bridge is central and full of Berlin icons: street art, a piece of the Berlin Wall, the East Side Gallery, and a proliferation of cafes. Friedrichshain is another option with a hip vibe due to the students who congregate at its cafes and galleries. Consider Mitte as a historic home base. Mitte is the area where almost all of Berlin's well-known buildings are located, and it is within walking distance of Alexanderplatz. For a peaceful residential area, try Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf where the streets are lined with boutiques and quiet coffee shops.
