Franzoesischer Dom, Berlin

4.2
Französischer Dom is the colloquial designation for the "French Church of Friedrichstadt" located in Berlin on the Gendarmenmarkt across from the Deutscher Dom, formerly a church of German-speaking congregants.Louis Cayart and Abraham Quesnay built the first parts of the French Church from 1701 to 1705 for the Huguenot community. At that time, Huguenots made up about 25% of Berlin's population. The French Church was modelled after the destroyed Huguenot temple in Charenton-Saint-Maurice, France. In 1785 Carl von Gontard modified the church and built—wall to wall next to it—the domed tower, which, together with the French-speaking congregants, gave the church its name. The domed tower is technically not part of the church, there is no access between church and tower, and both buildings have different proprietors. It was built to embellish the Gendarmenmarkt ensemble at the instigation of Frederick the Great. The Deutscher Dom, however, on the other side of Gendarmenmarkt, consists of church building and tower as an entity.

  • The French Cathedral is one of 3 remarkable buildings on the Gendarmenmarkt. The style fits in well with the ensemble of the square. Striking high dome Tower, but it was probably wanted by Frederick II. For a visit it was not enough for me. But with everything one reads positive impressions here, I will do that next time.

  • If you are on the square in front of the Dom runs you imagine yourself in France. Due to time constraints, we are not in the Dom.

  • The climb to the viewing platform of the French Cathedral definitely worth for 3,-EURO and lots of stairs. The view is phenomenal and gives a fantastic overview of the whole city and the environment. There are benches on which work the views can be in peace.

  • Lovely historic cathedral. For the price and other options in Berlin it's not the most awe-inspiring. If you are touring cathedrals in Berlin then this one is a must, but if you can only see one then this is certainly not it.
  • Absolutely stunning cathedral, breathtaking views over the city for only €3 and well worth the walk up the steps. Highly recommended.
  • The French Cathedral, Market squire, Berlin is a beautiful place. Gives a good view of the city
  • nice place to visit but not a "must"
  • It is a nice place to visit. For classical music - well that depends. The walls don't resonate that well - too much concrete, I guess.

Where to stay in Berlin

The Kreuzberg neighborhood near the Oberbaumbrüke bridge is central and full of Berlin icons: street art, a piece of the Berlin Wall, the East Side Gallery, and a proliferation of cafes. Friedrichshain is another option with a hip vibe due to the students who congregate at its cafes and galleries. Consider Mitte as a historic home base. Mitte is the area where almost all of Berlin's well-known buildings are located, and it is within walking distance of Alexanderplatz. For a peaceful residential area, try Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf where the streets are lined with boutiques and quiet coffee shops.
