Even if it's a tourist thing, once going through is worth. And maybe there's still a nice souvenir in one of the small shops.

When one comes to Berlin for a week as a tourist, get closer to know this city, you have the big problem, what you about to see in this limited time first. We have recorded the Hackesche Höfe in our program and it was really worth. You are a lovely mixture of architecture, friendly shops and gastronomy. The previous commentators include many details, I must therefore not again repeat.

This gem not far from the railway station Hackescher Markt is just hard to describe with words. Interesting architecturally, conceptually as well. Here you can shop, stop, in the cinema, porcelain from a manufacturer to buy and live. It is simply beautiful, idyllic despite tourists and somehow unique. The shops are original, so there is for example an ice cream store named "Cup or Waffle". Here's Green here is life, and yet it is not crowded. So many hearts for the Hackesche Höfe

  • Superb food. Natural ambience. One of the few independent restaurants worth going to
  • Great spot for breakfast when catching the S bahn. Menu was extensive for lunch and dinner too. Opted for the small plate breakfast which consisted of a selection of cheese, salami, bread and fruit. Really nice and good service too.
  • A labyrinth of beautiful inner patios, with lovely renovated buildings, in Jugendstil. Inside these höfes are very expensive & alternative fancy shops.
  • A lovely place for breakfast. I would particularly recommend the turkey, scrambled eggs and fruit option. It sounded strange but worked surprisingly well.
  • This place is absolutely gorgeous. It is essentially a huge open air shopping mall. Many buildings are connected, and through the walkway there are many doors for each individual store. The architecture itself is amazing, a very classic style. Each building is slightly different in terms of construction, yet they are all a cohesive collection. There are many stores one would recognise even outside of Berlin, such as H&M. However, there are also uniquely German/Berliner things such as a candy shop with homemade candies and chocolate, as well as an upscale food store selling spices, sauces, and jams.

Where to stay in Berlin

The Kreuzberg neighborhood near the Oberbaumbrüke bridge is central and full of Berlin icons: street art, a piece of the Berlin Wall, the East Side Gallery, and a proliferation of cafes. Friedrichshain is another option with a hip vibe due to the students who congregate at its cafes and galleries. Consider Mitte as a historic home base. Mitte is the area where almost all of Berlin's well-known buildings are located, and it is within walking distance of Alexanderplatz. For a peaceful residential area, try Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf where the streets are lined with boutiques and quiet coffee shops.
