Brandenburg Gate, Berlin

(4.5/5 based on 28,000+ reviews on the web)
Brandenburg Gate was built in the 18th century as a defining symbol of the city, but it ended up in the middle of the no-man’s land separating East and West Germany for the better part of the 20th century. Today, this impressive monument epitomizes European unification and continued peace. It often serves as an attractive backdrop for special events, such as concerts. Architect Carl Gotthard Langhans designed the triumphal arch, finding inspiration in classical Greek architecture. He chose this spot to serve as the entry into the city’s renowned boulevard of linden trees. Artist Johan Gottfried Schadow’s sculpture of a winged goddess commanding a chariot crowns the gate. • Don't go visiting this place when the Afghani President is in town otherwise you may be in the presence of a sniper or 20 but a beautiful piece of Architecture. It's best to see lit up at night. A "bu...  more »
  • Beautiful monument. We went in the evening, the monument was perfectly lit. It wasn't crowded by turists nor street sellers of junk stuff. I really recommend to visit this!  more »
  • Monument typical of Berlin, go to Berlin and not pasra through the door is like have not gone, is worthwhile because of its history and situation. The views from both sides of the door are curious mu, on the one hand to the Tiergarte gardens and on the other the main street Berlin Unter den Linden

  • This is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Berlin so it is constantly surrounded by tourists. This does detract from the experience somewhat but there is lots to do here. Always roving entertainers, bike tours, food vans and the lovely parkland to explore behind the gate. If you want to experience it tourist free then come early in the morning. 7:00am or even earlier if you can. Its a great place to sit during sunrise in summer and hardly anyone around.
  • A beautiful structure which is surrounded by tourists taking photos of each other. The road leading up to the gate is a lovely but fairly normal Berlin road and then the huge gate appears in front of you. It’s worth seeing because it’s so impressive but once you get there and see it there’s not much to do but move along to the next thing on your list. Impressive and worth seeing.
  • Interesting area with an impressive landmark. Not too many street vendors in the area spoiling the experience. You do get the sense though that most of the people visiting the gate are there because its a place where people go, rather than understand the significance or history. There are a few signs in the area given some background information in several languages.
  • One of the most popular tourist attractions in Berlin, meaning that the area is buzzing with tourists taking pictures. The gate with it's surrounding area is breathtaking and monumental. There is also a lot of traffic, so watch your step and look where your kids are running. Also be aware of pickpockets... A lot of begging too, in this area.
  • Visited this gate on August 14th (Pakistan`s Independence Day) while wearing a Pakistani-German badge. People were very friendly & curious to know about the importance of the badge I was wearing. Overall atmosphere was great!
