Bode Museum, Berlin

3.9
#26 of 121 in Museums in Berlin
Art Museum Museum
Set in a striking, early-20th-century building, Bode Museum is home to sculptures, Byzantine art, and one of the world's largest coin and medal collections. Admire the sculpture exhibit, and discover fine pieces such as Donatello's "Pazzi Madonna" and Antonio Canova's "Dancer." Study the Byzantine collection of ivory carvings, mosaics, icons, and more. Alongside the coins and medals of the Münzkabinett, you can find seals, tokens, minting tools, and non-numismatic forms of money. Make Bode Museum a centerpiece of your Berlin vacation itinerary, and find what else is worth visiting using our Berlin travel itinerary maker.

  • This is mainly a sculpture museum. It covers the period from late Antiquity (continuing on from other museums on Museuminsel) to the end of the 18th century. Of the building itself, it is based around...  more »
  • I felt a bit deterred by some of the lukewarm reviews. But the Bode Museum is an absolutely lovely experience. You can’t see everything in one visit, so I loved looking closely at the paintings and sc...  more »
  • We had the luck on a quiet weekday to experience a nice long visit at the Bode Museum. Since I work have to do with coins, the Münzgalerie was a highlight for us, of course. Especially since we also have the great Canadian gold coin have seen (which unfortunately was stolen). All in all a wonderful visit.

  • There's a lot to see here. You have paintings from the Renaissance, late Renaissance, modern, ancient paintings, paintings from every period really! They have a nice coin collection, there are artifacts from Egypt and ancient Rome. Sculptures and paintings from Italy, Germany, France, Spain, Belgium, the Netherlands and Spain among other places. One piece of advice: don't go here if you don't have a lot of time to spend (that probably applies to most museums in Berlin though).
  • Go if you have time. Not so many interesting pieces inside. The entrance is astonishing and you go up to the café for free. wow
  • The Bodemuseum is quite pricey for the size of it but does offer a nice array of exhibitions and different pieces from around the world. I would suggest buying a museum pass and visiting all the museum's there.
  • I went to this place on a Friday about 2 hours before it closed. The place was practically empty. Feeling like I had the whole museum to myself it was amazing to see everything and have the freedom to move around and not feel rushed. The highlights were the wide range of coins and religious pieces to see. Take time and make sure you see every corner of this museum. There are so many almost hidden areas it helps to make a note of which rooms you've been in or pick up a floor plan. If you are not very religious you could find this museum boring but it's flooding with history so if this is your thing it's a must see museum.
  • The building itself is worth a visit. You can also see the entrance Hall without a ticket. The collections are important — I specifically liked the museum of Byzantine art.

Where to stay in Berlin

The Kreuzberg neighborhood near the Oberbaumbrüke bridge is central and full of Berlin icons: street art, a piece of the Berlin Wall, the East Side Gallery, and a proliferation of cafes. Friedrichshain is another option with a hip vibe due to the students who congregate at its cafes and galleries. Consider Mitte as a historic home base. Mitte is the area where almost all of Berlin's well-known buildings are located, and it is within walking distance of Alexanderplatz. For a peaceful residential area, try Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf where the streets are lined with boutiques and quiet coffee shops.
