#24 of 168 in Museums in Berlin
Set in a striking, early-20th-century building, Bode Museum is home to sculptures, Byzantine art, and one of the world's largest coin and medal collections. Admire the sculpture exhibit, and discover fine pieces such as Donatello's "Pazzi Madonna" and Antonio Canova's "Dancer." Study the Byzantine collection of ivory carvings, mosaics, icons, and more. Alongside the coins and medals of the Münzkabinett, you can find seals, tokens, minting tools, and non-numismatic forms of money. • The Bode Museum is a Museum of art, which are exposed to the public sculptures, Egyptian and Byzantine and Numismatic art. It belongs to the Museum of the Museum Island Group, is located at the tip of the island, on the river Spree. The war badly damaged the collection, which lost many pieces and was closed by restorations from 1997 until it was reopened in 2006.

  • There are even some lovely paintings including a mediaeval copy of the Van Der Weyden deposition in the Prado. Highlights: the Tilman Riemannschneider St Matthew and Noli me Tangere; the Rood from Sax...  more »
  • Left guiltily for last visits the Museum Island on Thursday (when the museums of the island closed at 20), we could not visit it with the correct timing. It is very instructive in the sense that for example you tried to re create a Renaissance church, rather than the Byzantine apse dome of the Ravenna school. There is a lot of German Gothic sculpture, but there is also Donatello and Canova. In special exhibition (beyond from Africa) of ethnic ancient carvings contrasted with similar topic and contemporary as possible; the comparisons don't have convinced me that much, but it was very interesting to interface with these arts.

  • What an amazing museum part of museum island. I only got to see three due to so many artifacts. I would highly recommended this museum as with the others. You will need a one day pass at 18 euros but you will need an early start to see all five museums. I will be back to see the two I didn't visit.
  • This museum has a large collection of sculptures and coins. There are highlights such as half a room of Donatello sculptures, a golden mosaic cupola, and the building itself. There were also countless crucifixes, altarpieces, panel paintings, and other religious art that seem to be selected as examples of part of a time period rather than selected for their aesthetic quality. The more curated temporary exhibition was quite enjoyable.
  • I give this museum four starts mainly because the building itself was so beautiful it was worth the trip in itself. The collection was rather basic and not very interesting. The contemporary exhibition "beyond compare" was bad. So little thought through and it almost only compared the African artefacts to Christian symbols. This could have been done so much more interesting.
  • Huge museum! It takes about 1h 20min to see all the stuff quickly. Recommended if you're interested in history and art
  • Incredible artwork and sculptures. The museum itself was beautiful and well designed. A perfect way to spend the day. Free WiFi, student discounts, and free coat check.
