#40 of 836 in Things to do in Berlin
Designed as a high-tech station for a newly reunified city, Berlin Hauptbahnhof serves more than 300,000 passengers daily. You can arrive via a short trip on the metro from the city center or from the airport on a special transit train. An 85 by 120 m (297 by 39 ft) glass ceiling enhances the main concourse's oval shape. You can browse an extensive selection of stores and cafes in the main halls. Of course, you'll find plenty of areas to watch some of the more than 1,800 daily trains pull in. This is the place to be if you want to head to almost any point in Germany. We arrived by train (!) in the afternoon and had to hurry to get to our hotel. We were immediately impressed by the building and decided that we would look at the many businesses, which is also in the building, when we were to travel home. As I said, so done. There were many good stores with a wide selection, and clean the staff were approachable, there were a great many fine details. Well worth a visit.

If you go by train to Berlin, it comes actually automatically here. A daring design and a modern crossing station. with many shops. Important for the 1st visit to Berlin

  • The courtyard in the back closes at ten which is lame but understandable for noise level. However! The people need somewhere to be outside so they congregate in the front of the hostel being obnoxiously loud until 1, to 2 am. It's essentially a bar on the street. You might say close your window! I would love to do this but a lot of places in Germany don't have a.c., understandable, or fans so the window needs to stay open for air circulation. The rooms is nice otherwise for a budget travel stop. If you're room is along the street request to change it.
  • This hostel has a few good points: it's not too far from the Berlin main station and it's cheap but the room I stayed in was awful. Simply too many for the space. The night was disturbed by people coming and going. Another oddity is that they ask you if you want bedding ???? I mean do they think that some people prefer not to have sheets and a duvet? Little atmosphere, not a place to meet other hostelers very easily. Like I said, it's cheap but if you have a few more euros, I recommend you look elsewhere.
  • Good sized rooms, occasionally gets a bit loud but that's for a few seconds and then it's quiet again - you won't have any problems getting off to sleep at night. Staff generally have a good grasp of English - but then that's true of most Berliners. Towels are small for a big chap, and by big I mean most adult men - bring yours with you. Location is ace, around the corner from the train station. Bear in mind that large groups stay here, sometimes leaving out to go somewhere becomes a pain -. They will not make way for you. Even teachers with students will ignore you. Better off walking in the road to get round them. ..I decided to steam through them in the end, having said " excuse me " three times to a French teacher and being roundly ignored, gave her some choice English swearwords and barged past the cow. That is my one and only criticism of here - and even that's got nothing to do with the hostel itself. Deffo will come again. It's worth it.
  • This hotel/hostel has a great location because you can reach the Central Station with a 10 minutes (or less) walk and it is not far from the city center if you like a nice walk to enjoy the city. The hotel in general looks new and the staff were very nice. The room was clean and comfortable, with great heating and a good bathroom. In the lobby they have a bar and you can order something to eat (open 24h). We were in the 4th floor so it was very quite.
  • Nice room. Room cleaned each day. Bar serves nice beer. Only a 8 min walk to the main train station.

Where to stay in Berlin

The Kreuzberg neighborhood near the Oberbaumbrüke bridge is central and full of Berlin icons: street art, a piece of the Berlin Wall, the East Side Gallery, and a proliferation of cafes. Friedrichshain is another option with a hip vibe due to the students who congregate at its cafes and galleries. Consider Mitte as a historic home base. Mitte is the area where almost all of Berlin's well-known buildings are located, and it is within walking distance of Alexanderplatz. For a peaceful residential area, try Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf where the streets are lined with boutiques and quiet coffee shops.
