Alte Nationalgalerie, Berlin

(4.1/5 based on 500+ reviews on the web)
Alte Nationalgalerie is part of the Staatliche Museen on Museum Island, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Originally National Gallery (which has since been moved), the current gallery features Romantic, Neoclassic, Impressionist, and early Modernist artwork. The building itself is a work of art, representing "the unity of art, nation, and history," according to the designers. At intervals, it evokes a theater, a church, and a temple. • Due to the central location to go well with public transport means and has only short distances. It is interesting for the children.

  • Without queue to access, this museum looks small outside but is rather complete. At the same time there is classicism, romanticism and German Impressionism, with some French (a whole room for the party Impressionism) works. A room is dedicated to Friedrich. Some say, I find this really interesting Museum, the reluctance may come because these are currents known in France but represented here with a German point of view (normal!). It is very nice, without suffocating crowds of visitors! I recommend it more than the Pergamon Museum. If you plan to do several museums on the island, take the ticket that allows access to all is more interesting even if you 'only' 2 or 3.

  • Exquisite paintings in different styles, from french impressionism to classic ones. I enjoyed Friedrich and Schinkel in particular. Being students we had free entry but I think that even paying 5/10€ ...  more »

  • Great museum, with excellent audio guide to go with. Mostly (amazing) paintings but also some exquisite sculptures. I spent several hours walking about and the interior architecture made it both soothing and pleasant. Especially impressive how the modern architectural touch blends seamless in with the old. Friendly and to the point staff.
  • National Gallery housing Berlin's fine arts collection. Had to give it a pass for myself, but those interested in the arts should venture inside.
  • Liked it a lot. It is a medium size Museum, if you have been to the Louvre, British Museum or anywhere at Italy, you won't be impressed.
  • Worth a visit. Has nice exhibits and walking around at night is quite nice too.
