Alte Nationalgalerie, Berlin

4.2
#17 of 120 in Museums in Berlin
Alte Nationalgalerie is part of the Staatliche Museen on Museum Island, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Originally National Gallery (which has since been moved), the current gallery features Romantic, Neoclassic, Impressionist, and early Modernist artwork. The building itself is a work of art, representing "the unity of art, nation, and history," according to the designers. At intervals, it evokes a theater, a church, and a temple. After all the lines, crowds and monumental ancient things at the Pergamon and Neues Museums, this Museum Island museum offers a refreshing change of pace. Among other things, it offers paintings by ar...  more »

Great place to visit on a wet day or when too hot. Could spend 2 hours. €10 entry but this includes an audio guide which gives information on the main paintings. Coffee shop and shop in building. Not ...  more »

  • Definitely worth going to if you enjoy the painting styles of the 1800s (romanticism, impressionism, photo realistic portraiture, etc.), which I certainly do. The collection is consistently interesting throughout. It may not have as many famous paintings by well-known masters as some galleries, but for the extensive collection of German works, I'd say it's worth seeing. They also have a fabulous room with (mostly) lesser known works by many of the French impressionists, including at least one sculpture by Rodin that I'd never seen, and I love Rodin.

  • One of my favorite museums in Berlin. So many beautiful paintings and sculptures. A must if you visit the museum island.
  • Beautiful display of neo classical art! The statuary was the highlight in my opinion. Very nice museum to visit.
  • Beautiful collection of classic art! 4 floors of paintings, statues, and more. Really worth the visit!

Where to stay in Berlin

The Kreuzberg neighborhood near the Oberbaumbrüke bridge is central and full of Berlin icons: street art, a piece of the Berlin Wall, the East Side Gallery, and a proliferation of cafes. Friedrichshain is another option with a hip vibe due to the students who congregate at its cafes and galleries. Consider Mitte as a historic home base. Mitte is the area where almost all of Berlin's well-known buildings are located, and it is within walking distance of Alexanderplatz. For a peaceful residential area, try Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf where the streets are lined with boutiques and quiet coffee shops.
