Alte Nationalgalerie, Berlin
(4.1/5 based on 480+ reviews on the web)
Alte Nationalgalerie is part of the Staatliche Museen on Museum Island, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Originally National Gallery (which has since been moved), the current gallery features Romantic, Neoclassic, Impressionist, and early Modernist artwork. The building itself is a work of art, representing "the unity of art, nation, and history," according to the designers. At intervals, it evokes a theater, a church, and a temple. • The painting by Caspar David Friedrich, the frescoes from the Casa Bartholdy, the other paintings from the romantic school and the works by Menzel and not the Impressionists, with which it is advertised are heart. I'm glad that sculptures are retarded by the Rembrandt Bugatti exhibitions.

  • Built in 1876, this museum has the appearance of a Corinthian temple. It is located on the perfect (Museum Island) which includes five major institutions, including the Bode or the Pergamon. Here are collected works from the 18th to the 20th century. Two axes are essential: french art, beautifully represented by Courbet, Manet, Monet, Rodin, Cézanne; and the German axis, with the paintings however so interesting and impressive beauty of Caspar David Friederich alongside artists we know less.

  • Most visitors will be mostly interested in the French impressionists (Manet, Renoir...), but this museum offers a beautiful overview of 19th century German art (realism, impressionism, romanticism, la...  more »

  • Great museum, with excellent audio guide to go with. Mostly (amazing) paintings but also some exquisite sculptures. I spent several hours walking about and the interior architecture made it both soothing and pleasant. Especially impressive how the modern architectural touch blends seamless in with the old. Friendly and to the point staff.
  • National Gallery housing Berlin's fine arts collection. Had to give it a pass for myself, but those interested in the arts should venture inside.
  • Liked it a lot. It is a medium size Museum, if you have been to the Louvre, British Museum or anywhere at Italy, you won't be impressed.
  • Worth a visit. Has nice exhibits and walking around at night is quite nice too.
