Specialty Museum Museum
Alte Nationalgalerie is part of the Staatliche Museen on Museum Island, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Originally National Gallery (which has since been moved), the current gallery features Romantic, Neoclassic, Impressionist, and early Modernist artwork. The building itself is a work of art, representing "the unity of art, nation, and history," according to the designers. At intervals, it evokes a theater, a church, and a temple. • In a privileged site of the Museum Island, beside the river and opposite the new Museum and the Pergamon Museum, stands the National Gallery with an imposing front both as foot sculpture its grand staircase. You can see different artworks both sculpture and painting though he has the fame of the former two is worth a visit.

  • First great building of the Parthenon Temple in Greece. Interior painting is equipped with Germany painting of 19th-century and Impressionist works. Impressionist painting covers all works of the artist are not? It was heard once somewhere in there including the artist, very substantial.

  • Museum Island an absolute sensation; easy to see why it’s a UNESCO World Heritage site. The Caspar David Friedrich room at Alte Nationalgalerie was just about the high spot in a week in Berlin. Sublim...  more »

  • Definitely worth going to if you enjoy the painting styles of the 1800s (romanticism, impressionism, photo realistic portraiture, etc.), which I certainly do. The collection is consistently interesting throughout. It may not have as many famous paintings by well-known masters as some galleries, but for the extensive collection of German works, I'd say it's worth seeing. They also have a fabulous room with (mostly) lesser known works by many of the French impressionists, including at least one sculpture by Rodin that I'd never seen, and I love Rodin.

  • One of my favorite museums in Berlin. So many beautiful paintings and sculptures. A must if you visit the museum island.
  • Beautiful display of neo classical art! The statuary was the highlight in my opinion. Very nice museum to visit.
  • Beautiful collection of classic art! 4 floors of paintings, statues, and more. Really worth the visit!

Where to stay in Berlin

The Kreuzberg neighborhood near the Oberbaumbrüke bridge is central and full of Berlin icons: street art, a piece of the Berlin Wall, the East Side Gallery, and a proliferation of cafes. Friedrichshain is another option with a hip vibe due to the students who congregate at its cafes and galleries. Consider Mitte as a historic home base. Mitte is the area where almost all of Berlin's well-known buildings are located, and it is within walking distance of Alexanderplatz. For a peaceful residential area, try Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf where the streets are lined with boutiques and quiet coffee shops.
