Stadion An der Alten Försterei is the largest single-purpose football stadium in the German capital Berlin. It has been home to football club 1. FC Union Berlin and its forerunners since it was opened in 1920.The stadium's capacity was last redeveloped in 2009 and expanded in 2013. Some of the redevelopment work was carried out by over 2,300 Union Berlin supporters volunteering their services. During league matches the arena features a total capacity of 22,012 including 3,617 seats whilst the rest of the ground remains terracing. The stadium became also known for events like the annual "Weihnachtssingen" and the "WM-Wohnzimmer" in 2014.History1920-1966In 1920 SC Union Oberschöneweide had to find a new home ground as its former pitch had been built over by developers with residential buildings. The club moved a little further away from the city to the north-western part of the borough of Köpenick. The new stadium was officially opened in August 1920 with a match between Oberschöneweide and the then German champions 1. FC Nuremberg . The inaugural match in at the Alte Försterei had already been played on 17 March, when Union challenged Viktoria 89 Berlin- an illustrious club who had won the German Championship three times around the turn of the century - to a friendly.1966-todayWhen Union won promotion to the DDR-Oberliga (the top flight in East Germany) in 1966, the stadium soon needed to be expanded. The ground was first expanded in 1970 when the Gegengerade terrace was raised, whilst further extensions to the terracing at both ends in the late 1970s and early 1980s increased the capacity furthermore to 22,500.

The stadium of football club 1. FC Union Berlin, which I am now avid supporter since 2 years. In the stadium ... virtually unbeatable in terms of atmosphere, partly by the fanatical following. Never experienced unrest there, am now a time or 8. It breathes there football, the f-side to three sides of the field (where you can find it yet) and close to the field. Eisern Union!

We visited the old forest to an away game for our team. It is incredibly difficult to find a parking space and therefore, I would rather recommend a journey by public transport. The guest block is fairly easy to find. The stadium itself is simply football... That pretty much sums it. Without much gadgetry and event. This is about the sport. The fans of Union are just amazing and make your visit a real experience. The stadium itself has standing room only, for the most part what really good mood. The catering prices are acceptable.

An intimate arena with mostly standing room only, heard that the supporters participated in the renovated Stadium. Great atmosphere and setting. There were also good at football. Here I want to go again. However, it was slow-moving queues, can be polished up!

Where to stay in Berlin

The Kreuzberg neighborhood near the Oberbaumbrüke bridge is central and full of Berlin icons: street art, a piece of the Berlin Wall, the East Side Gallery, and a proliferation of cafes. Friedrichshain is another option with a hip vibe due to the students who congregate at its cafes and galleries. Consider Mitte as a historic home base. Mitte is the area where almost all of Berlin's well-known buildings are located, and it is within walking distance of Alexanderplatz. For a peaceful residential area, try Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf where the streets are lined with boutiques and quiet coffee shops.
