Allied Museum (Alliierten Museum), Berlin

4.0
#54 of 172 in Museums in Berlin
A museum that honors the work of Allied troops in World War II, Allied Museum (Alliierten Museum) is in the former American Sector of postwar Berlin. Much of the museum's area is an open-air exhibit with a collection of aircraft used by the Allies during the war. Inside you'll find weapons, uniforms, documents, and other artifacts that tell the stories of the brave soldiers who helped free Berlin. Two points of interest are the Nicholson Memorial Library, where an archive of documents is open to the public, and the Fall of the Wall sculpture by Veryl Goodnight on the museum grounds. • After World War II, Berlin was divided into four sectors, controlled by America, Britain, France and Russia. Soon the cold war broke out between the super powers, and as the Soviet Union controlled th...  more »
  • The Museum is free. It is the period of the cold war in Berlin from the point of view of the allies. The cartels have a version in french. Compared to what we have seen so far, it's less heavy and horrible, it feels good! The temporary exhibition features 100 objects with their explanation in relation to the allies and the cold war and often the story of someone who is attached (also in french). It's modern, sometimes moving and interesting. I loved this muse and recommend!

  • Who is interested in the story of Berlin during the cold war, is right here. The Museum presents the history of the allies with many interesting exhibits in Berlin. For us, it was a very enjoyable visit. Admission to the Museum is free.

  • It is nice to see what the allied forces have done and that they are not forgotten. The museum is free...if visiting Berlin this museum should be on your list of things to do. It is small, but nice.
  • Excellent museum and well told story. And it is all for free!!
  • For a free exhibition, the Allied Museum is really well-curated. I say well because it's packed adequate amount of information for time spent in the museum. There are some museums that try to flood you with artefacts and information within a short span of time and a small space and the Allied Museum is not one of those. It's a former military cinema converted into a museum which makes it even more interesting inside. There are artefacts about daily life about the Western Allies in Berlin in the period between WW2 and Cold War. What stood out to me most are the exhibits on Der Tagesspiegel and the Berlin Airlift. Der Tagesspiegel was set up in this period -- go find out why! Be sure to check out the temporary exhibition 100 Objects of Cold War too. If you're looking for a family room or nursing room, there's one in the building that houses the 100 Objects exhibition.
  • Amazing time travel. Great location! Excellent DISPLAY! 10 times more worth visiting than Checkpoint Charlie and all the other overcrowded tourist spots.
  • Nice relics of the cold war. If you are interested in that era, a good stop, if not do something else with your time.

Where to stay in Berlin

The Kreuzberg neighborhood near the Oberbaumbrüke bridge is central and full of Berlin icons: street art, a piece of the Berlin Wall, the East Side Gallery, and a proliferation of cafes. Friedrichshain is another option with a hip vibe due to the students who congregate at its cafes and galleries. Consider Mitte as a historic home base. Mitte is the area where almost all of Berlin's well-known buildings are located, and it is within walking distance of Alexanderplatz. For a peaceful residential area, try Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf where the streets are lined with boutiques and quiet coffee shops.
