Zum Türken, Berchtesgaden

(100+ reviews on the web)
Historic Site
Once seized by the Nazis and used as a bunker, Zum Türken, built in 1911, now serves as an upscale hotel. Although the guestrooms are modern, visitors can still descend a spiral staircase to explore the historic, 1943 underground hallways and tunnels where SS soldiers once hid out. (Many guests say it's a spooky experience.) With no tour guides available, you're on your own to explore; take a German/English dictionary if you can't read the local language. Take a look at our Berchtesgaden trip generator to schedule your visit to Zum Türken and learn about what else to see and do during your holiday.

  • We visited the Nazi-bunkers on the Obersalzberg. Unbelievable how the tunnels are made in such a short period ( 2 years ).  more »
  • Absolutely amazing. Several kilometers of tunnels and bunkers under the area. Most are sealed or gated off but what is accessible is awesome. We went four (+?) flights down under the hotel exploring. ...  more »
  • The bunkers go quite deep underground, fascinating part of history. The visit took about 20/30 mins. Very close to the Dokumentation Centre. 3.50 entry. Hitler's bunker was sealed off but would still ...  more »

  • We had a wonderful stay at this historic hotel. We had initially only reserved one of the smaller rooms, but decided to upgrade to one of the larger rooms in the original section of the hotel with a balcony overlooking Berchtesgaden. Unfortunately we brought rainy weather with us when we showed up, but still caught some beautiful views of the town below. The upgrade was still well worth it as it also gave us in room "facilities", which isn't always a given in older European hotels. This was one of my favorite hotels during our 3 week stay in Europe. The access to the bunker system underneath the hotel is an added bonus. Not often you get a chance to explore part of a WWII bunker system for a few Euro.... When we make it back to this part of Germany we'll be staying here again. Great experience!
  • Hotel Zum Turken WWII Bunkers, great bunkers. It will cost you € 3,50, but it's well worth it. The bunkers are bigger than in the Documentation Centre.
  • Don't expect a luxury hotel, but expect an original hotel who will take you back in time. The hotel owner will make you feel at home, the true German breakfast is very good. For those who want to feel the history of the Obersalzberg this is the place to stay!
  • If you are looking for the modern and luxurious accomodation, well organised entertaiment, TV, internet and the round the clock services, there are plenty of places to go. If you want something different, like the peaceful charming and quiet place of a special kind with the touch of "old good times", one of the places becoming more and more uncommon, then go to Turken - you will not be dissapointed.
  • The best bunker tour in the area, you cannot beat the sight. A must see if you're visiting.
