(1,200+ reviews on the web)
Landmark Tourist Spot
Delve 300 m (984 ft) beneath the Bavarian Alps at Berchtesgaden Salt Mines. Amazingly, this working salt mine has been constant use since 1517 and today employs almost 100 workers. Don a reflective suit and hop into specialized underground mine cars. At the end of the ride, you'll get to see the mine's subterranean Mirror Lake. Throughout, you can learn about the age-old industry of harvesting salt from the composite rock. You can eat afterward in a restaurant located in the former machinery building. Admission is only available via guided tour. Berchtesgaden Salt Mines is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our international travel planner, Berchtesgaden Edition.

  • My family and I visited the salt mines and 3 of us absolutely loved it, fun and interesting. My youngest (5 years old) found the slides and dark a bit scary. Overall very good though!  more »
  • Well planned and reasonable trip. Great fun on slides, suitable for all. Good audio hassle free guide. Can't come to this region without doing a salt mine. Good well stocked shop as well.  more »
  • This is a pretty good attraction. I've been here before several years ago. First you get to put on salt mining attire and get on a low riding train and travel through a tunnel carved through salt. Com...  more »
