Hermitage Castle (Altes Schloss Ermitage), Bayreuth

(4.8/5 based on 190+ reviews on the web)
Take at least half a day to visit the extensive grounds of the Hermitage Castle (Altes Schloss Ermitage), a residential palace and museum. While the Baroque gardens are traditional, they were the first in Germany to include waterfalls along with its hedge gardens and pergolas. The Old Palace, constructed in 1715 by the Margrave Georg Wilhelm, was expanded upon greatly in the 1740s and 1750s with the addition of a music room, Asian mirror cabinets, the Ruined Theater, the New Palace, and the upper and lower grottos. From May to October, catch one of the hourly waterworks show in the garden's fountains. Make Hermitage Castle (Altes Schloss Ermitage) a centerpiece of your Bayreuth vacation itinerary, and find what else is worth visiting using our Bayreuth vacation planner.

  • The Ermitage is the best place to be in Bayreuth. The park is stunnning, doesn't matter the season you are going to visit it. Walking around the small Forest, between the old and the new castle will m...  more »

  • You can spend an afternoon walking through the formal and informal gardens of the old and new Hermitage palace. Don´t forget the water fountains and the pavilions. The café in the orangery next to the sun temple was still open. They serve really nice Wilhelmine-tart (a chocolate tart named after the Margravine Wilhelmine) and a refreshing drink called Schlossgetränk (translates as "Castle-Drink") which is bitter lemon with two scoops of lemon ice cream (and lime bits for decoration). I loved it. It has a good chance of becoming a favourite summer drink. The park has nice walks and some nice views, pavilions, ... Parking was free and walking in the park, too.
  • A guided tour that fascinates and surprises that this curious Castle, halfway between a "hermit retreat" for court, accustomed to very different pomp, and the richness of the interior decorations, not to mention the beautiful underground Chamber with water, to which the distinguished and unsuspecting guests were subjected to their entry into the Castle. A really lovely place!
