Bamberg Altstadt, Bamberg
Categories: Historic Sites, Tourist Spots
With buildings from as far back as the 11th century, Bamberg Altstadt has a remarkably intact core. You can see an interesting mixture of Baroque style and a quintessential old German feel at this site on the UNESCO World Heritage list. Look for the 13th-century cathedral, the 14th-century town hall, and the city castle. Several bridges connect the different streets and neighborhoods by way of a small island. Be sure to try the area's famous Rauchbier--a brew with an interesting smoked flavor. For a deeper look into the old town's history, pay a visit to the Benedictine monastery's small museum.
