Monastic Island of Reichenau, Baden-Wurttemberg

4.1
Reichenau Island is an island in Lake Constance in southern Germany. It lies almost due west of the city of Konstanz, between the Gnadensee and the Untersee, two parts of Lake Constance. With a total land surface of 4.3 square kilometres and a circumference of 11 kilometres, the island is 4.5 kilometres long and 1.5 kilometres wide at its greatest extent. The highest point, the Hochwart, stands some 43 metres above the lake surface and 438.7 metres above mean sea level.Reichenau is connected to the mainland by a causeway, completed in 1838, which is intersected between the ruins of Schopflen Castle and the eastern end of Reichenau Island by a 10-metre-wide and 95-metre long waterway, the Bruckgraben. A low road bridge allows the passage of ordinary boats but not of sailing-boats.The island was declared a World Heritage Site in 2000 because of its monastery, the Abbey of Reichenau. The abbey's Münster (minster church) is dedicated to the Virgin and Saint Mark. Two further churches were built on the island consecrated to Saint George and to Saints Peter and Paul. The famous artworks of Reichenau include (in the church of St George) the Ottonian murals of miracles of Christ, unique survivals from the 10th century. The abbey's bailiff was housed in a two-storey stone building to which two more storeys of timber framing were added in the 14th century, one of the oldest timber-frame buildings in south Germany.

  • Just a few km from the town border of Konstanz lies the island of Reichenau. The narrow separation from the Mainland is linked by a short bridge. It would be wrong to claim that the island is particularly beautiful or attractive, no, it isn't, but the island has its special charm. What is immediately striking are the many greenhouses for tomatoes, aubergines, peppers Scots and then the lettuce fields. Not otherwise is called the "island of vegetables". You can explore the area with the bike and experience either with your own or to rent a bike directly on the island. The recreational center next to the campsite sand soul or Hithe INSEL Reichenau, directly at the landing site Reichenau, have the appropriate means of transport to the justice. The bicycle trail leads directly to the most interesting sights of the island. In the Northwest of the island is founded in the 8th century, the Basilica of St. Peter and Paul. In a small building next to it, a museum was established in which the emergence and history of the Church is represented. Close to the Marina, the Cathedral is St. Maria and Markus with Treasury. The Museum of Reichenau is a few hundred meters further and further mainland driving direction to get to the Museum St. Georg and St. George's Church. This Basilica is known for their Ottonian murals from the 10th century. Due to the many churches and monasteries, one speaks also of the monastic island of Reichenau. The island has Beach, camping place and landing, so that is possible with a ship of Radolfzell, Mannenbach, Schaffhausen and Constance. We were very impressed by this place and are already planning our next trip to the island of Reichenau.

  • If you're on Lake Constance, you should take for the island of Reichenau also time. 3 very old churches are worth a visit. But be careful with the last, St. Peter and Paul! In contrast to the other, where you can park for free, lurking here a municipality employee and make that everyone pulls a parking ticket. Whoever neglects it will also receive a warning in the amount of 10 home. A clever way to start but making.

  • Worth a visit with plenty of time to shoot it all. To be admired in all its parts, in addition to the three churches and the Museum with thumbnails.
