Castle Tourist Spot
Standing on a cliff high above Lorelei valley, Burg Stahleck was built at the behest of Archbishops of Cologne in the 12th century to guard the faraway Upper Middle Rhine archbishopric. The castle, whose name means literally "impregnable castle on a crag," is partially surrounded by a moat and offers views of the wooded hills and majestic Rhine. You'll also see the small town below, with its cobblestone streets, timber houses, and cozy restaurants. Today, the castle serves as a hostel. • This castle sits on the top of the hill of the town of Bacharach. For most people this is an easy hike uphill. We are a senior couple and chose to take it easy. It took us a good 3 hours round trip bu...  more »
  • This is a great place to go and have a cold beer or coffee and just admire the magnificent views of the Rhine.  more »
  • Cool Burg towering over the town of Bacharach. It's quite the steep switchback hike up. It is also an active youth hostel, so there were many middle-school aged kids running around when we visited.  more »

  • Great value, stunning location and views. Great hostel with friendly helpful staff, and a decent cafeteria for food. Be prepared for a tough climb up the hill though! Well worth it :)
  • Steep hike up a mountain to a fairly windy rough castle. Would have enjoyed it more if we were fitter and not exhausted by the time we got there.
  • Nice atmosphere, friendly staff, was a nice experience, I can recommend it.
  • You can enjoy beautiful view of Rhein river from here.
  • You don't have to have a room here to visit. There is a place to have a small piece of cake/coffee/tea so make the hike up and take advantage of the great and amazing views.
