  • Along the Maximilianstrasse, also known as the "mile of emperors", around 1600 were erected 3 majestic monumental fountains surmounted by precious bronze sculptures, Augsburger Prachtbrunnen, a triptych representing the "Imperial free city" which was Augusta in the past. The first fountain, the fountain of Augustus (There), is located in the Town Hall Square, followed by the Mercury Fountain (Merkursbrunnen) and finally the Hercules Fountain (Imperial) right in front of the Schaezlerpalais (about halfway down the long road Maximilianstrasse). Really a great triptych!!!

  • Along the main road of Augsburg you will find three fountains: the first devoted to Augustus, the second and the third mercury to Hercules. The fountains are nice but nothing special, they are pleasant to see along the way.

  • Three Augsburg magnificent fountains are a peace program, that runs through the Augsburg City Centre: the Hercules Fountain (Adriaen de Vries) with its Hydra, which just slain by Hercules, should not only from the bottom look at be, but also on the 1st floor of the nearby Schaezlerpalais: from there until the enormity of the monster is noticeable! The mercury Fountain (A. de Vries) at Moritzplatz one should be alone: viewed from the front mercury looks like he would do Amor at his feet to hurry with the link of the sandal of backward, mercury looks admittedly very puzzled, because Amor to take him off the sandal. Mercury is not only Messenger of gods, but also the patron saint of merchants: Amor will prevent him to go on the dangerous journey of the merchant? On the Augustus Fountain (Hubert Gerhard), an impressive ruler, with all attributes of an Emperor commands an army, maybe the City Council provided, maybe. The right arm has peremptorily to the Town Hall. But Gerhard, who could study Augustus statues in Italy, denied any facial resemblance this statue with Augustus, but similarity, this emperor has contemporary Regent Rudolf II.! Why a peace programme? Hercules tames the wild nature and paves the way for civilization. This is needed then wise reign. But only the world of merchants (mercury fountain stands in the middle of the three fountains) let life blossom.
