Fuggerei, Augsburg

4.5
Fuggerei is the oldest social housing project in the world, set up in the 16th century. Explore the walled enclave, and visit the model home to see what the houses look like inside. A visit to the museum, Catholic church, and a World War II bunker is included with your admission. In the museum, see what the apartments looked like when they were built more than 400 years ago, and learn more about the ethos of this project. Make sure to stop for a coffee and slice of cake in the restaurant. Guided tours are available. For travelers who use our world travel planner, Augsburg holidays become easier to arrange, with trips to the Fuggerei and other attractions mapped out and timetabled.

  • This "Citadel of the poor" — neighborhood, built according to a model of the "ideal city", entirely funded by the wealthy family of the Fuggers, who thus-for a change! -put to good use their own wealth. It's sort of a city within a city, complete with walls. A taste of history, including the corner that speaks of war, shelters during those years etc etc. Must see.

  • Interesting and awesome proposal. Elderly people capable of living in harmony with other seniors in the city

  • This is very interesting, and if you take the city bus tour its included in the price, along with the gold room at the town hall, with a guide to tell you all about them  more »
