  • There are to get two ways on this castle: either by walk or by an elevator experience. This costs however some money. Parking is free on Sundays and with the ticket (6 euro) you can also free in the German wire Museum. The Castle has an interesting Museum and declared the seat of the first youth hostel in the world very well. One should be as fit as many steep stairs climbed be :)

  • The tour is very well done. There are many exhibits and spaces explore including the first youth hostel in 1914 with original furniture in Germany. All at a very reasonable price.

  • You can so much to explore and discover. Alone of the hiking trails to the Burg Altena is beautiful and this one has a beautiful view over the Valley. Parking spaces are very limited at the Castle. Therefore better parking below the castle on the "long campaign". There is no parking problems. The footpath to the Castle from there approx. 15 minutes. Otherwise, but also a small castle bus runs up to the Castle. There is much to discover. A wonderful exciting Museum, the first youth hostel in the world, a castle lift through the mountain down to the city centre or of course up to the Castle. A restaurant, a tower for the climb, and much is still more. For beautiful photos alone, it is worth to visit the Castle.

  • A medieval castle that became the world's first youth hostel. Amazing to see, very historical. Well worth making the drive to see!
  • Very nice place in very nice cosy village. Come to Altena on Sunday and go tho the Fleumarkt! The castle is another reason to come to this city. Even to wonder around the castle worth to come here.
  • What a great place to visit. Well worth taking the elevator up and going through all the exhibits. Very well done, informative and easy to follow tour. Great for kids as well with lots of armor and weapons towards the end of the tour. Would go again in a heartbeat.
  • Just okay honestly. Nothing spectacular but it is interesting to know that the world's first youth hostel is located in it!
  • Drove 1.5 hrs to visit, not really worth the trip.
