Aachener Rathaus, Aachen
(4.3/5 based on 500+ reviews on the web)
Sitting next to the cathedral in Aachen's old town, the impressive was built in the early 14th century after taking over the ruined palace of Charlemagne. The building is emblematic of the civic freedom of the townspeople of Aachen. Its architectural foundations are Gothic, with Baroque elements added during the 17th and 18th centuries following the Great Fire of Aachen. On the north facade, you can see 50 statues of German rulers, 31 of whom were crowned in Aachen. Inside the building, check out the 19th-century Rethel frescoes in the Coronation Hall, as well as a collection of royal treasures and copies of the Imperial Crown Jewels. To avoid disappointment, check for state closure dates on the city's website before visiting. • The gray storm is a good place to eat from the time of Charlemagne, the Ratskeller. You can take part in the meetings of the Council and on the Tuesday before Carnival, you can visit the free Carnival Council meeting, in which most Council members pass themselves have more trouble with the preparation of their contributions, as all other year... You can visit it and has a good look at the market from the stairs. In the Council Chamber in de 1st floor there are beautiful frescos to see and it there also events take place and of course of the Charlemagne Prize, a usually pretty unspeakable event for Aachen QWichtigtuer who also want television... ;-)

  • Neat building that charges for entry. Worth it if you have the time, and a good getaway from the afternoon sun.
  • The top floor has a large hall used for concerts and events. It's really quite beautiful
  • Visiting Aachen is worthy even for just visiting this Gothic building and the cathedral. They use to have very good exhibitions inside the Townhall.
  • Fantastic landmark within Aachen. Must see.
  • Really impressive building especially during evening when it is lighted with orange and yellow colours.
