Aachener Rathaus, Aachen

#2 of 14 in Sightseeing in Aachen
Architectural Building Historic Site
Sitting next to the cathedral in Aachen's old town, the impressive was built in the early 14th century after taking over the ruined palace of Charlemagne. The building is emblematic of the civic freedom of the townspeople of Aachen. Its architectural foundations are Gothic, with Baroque elements added during the 17th and 18th centuries following the Great Fire of Aachen. On the north facade, you can see 50 statues of German rulers, 31 of whom were crowned in Aachen. Inside the building, check out the 19th-century Rethel frescoes in the Coronation Hall, as well as a collection of royal treasures and copies of the Imperial Crown Jewels. To avoid disappointment, check for state closure dates on the city's website before visiting. • Imposing building, above all by the towers and the stairs to the front. Through the Hall on the first floor (where also checkout is) you come in a number of more or less historic rooms. There is clear explanation which you can access through either the brochure via texts on the walls. Through the landing one can upstairs to the main hall. Impressive with wall paintings of historical scenes and a huge surface, actually over the entire building.

  • This is an architectural ensemble that has undergone many changes over the centuries and the damage he has suffered. Today, its façade is decidedly Gothic. On the other hand, the large rooms that is discovered since the entry are Baroque (the magnificent White room!) or Empire: huge portraits at the foot of Napoleon and Josephine decorate the room of the Council. I've been less seduced by coronations, the upstairs room, very impressive but the frescos of a firefighter and heavy taste Rethel: a notice that is only my opinion. Information, and very interesting movies on the bombing and the forced labour of prisoners during the second world war.

  • From the outside, the building is already solid and after one has climbed the stairs and goes into the Town Hall and has paid its € 6 entrance, you can visit the single rooms with his paper Guide. The sights are well described not only on paper but also on small panels in the door frame or to bursting, thus you can do everything very carefully Wahrnehmen. So comes from the Foyer eg. to the White Hall Court of master-craftsman kitchen Red Hall (Friedensssaal) and the coronation Hall, where every year the intern. Charlemagne Prize is awarded to personalities. Admission € 6 are good menus to stay somewhat longer
