Aachen Cathedral, Aachen

(4.6/5 based on 2,000+ reviews on the web)
Admire the impressive architectural mix of Gothic and Carolingian-Romanesque styles at Aachen Cathedral. Often referred to as the Imperial Cathedral, the church is the oldest of its kind in northern Europe. It served as the coronation site for German monarchs. You can tour the imperial throne and high altar of the mosaic-filled Palatine chapel. Then, head outside to see the dramatic Westwork, the building's western facade of staircases, niches, and bronze sculptures. Take a guided tour to see the throne and final resting place of Charlemagne. • Most German medieval cathedrals reflect the power of a merchant class-privileged bourgeois, Aachen Cathedral is a direct expression of the imperial power of Charlemagne: hence a profusion of wealth and ostentation, concentrated in a relatively small volume, which is hardly in other cathedrals of Germany, while spectacular and impressive. The ideal would be to have a guided tour to see the top of the Church with the throne of Charlemagne; If you can't, well worth a visit to free admission, which allows to observe magnificence as the rich stained glass Windows in the apse, the pulpit and the altar with gold decorations, and the spectacular wrought iron chandelier. Personally I intend to go back to not take advantage not only of the guided tour, but also to admire the Treasury (guarded) and why not for the same Aachen, which has an old town pleasant and harmonious, escaping from the practice of German cities that at least at first glance seem a bit all the same.

  • It was about 15 minutes walk from Aachen central station. Overwhelmed by a gorgeous decor, and stained-glass Windows. Café selling bakeries (soft cookies) near the Cathedral. Since Aachen's Memorial?.

  • Despite the fact that the town looks inconspicuous on the densely populated Europe map, visit his worth. In particular, for the sake of one of the most ancient evropejkih cathedrals, where in particular were crowned emperors of the Holy Roman Empire. Yes, and the city itself leaves a pleasant impression of cleanliness of streets and friendly passers-by.

  • Not a large cathedral, but a must see in Aachen. It dominates the main historical center. Be sure to remember and look up as you're walking around inside to see the details of the ceiling as well as the stain glass. Admission is free with a donation box as you enter.
  • Excellent place to visit. English tours every day at 14.00. Our guide Robert was absolutely great! Knowledgeable, excellent with kids and full of stories. Loved it.
  • A very excellent church to visit. Right at the heart of the city centre and a tourist attraction sight in Aachen
  • Even if you are not religious at all, this cathedral is a must visit place. It's the oldest in northern Europe. Go to view the Octagon and its chandelier + the amazing glass windows of the Gothic choir.
  • Karl der Grosse, the German edition was published in the 250th anniversary year by the C.H. Beck publishing house. The book tells the history about Charlemagne which is most readable and highly recommended.
