Aachen Cathedral, Aachen

4.6
Admire the impressive architectural mix of Gothic and Carolingian-Romanesque styles at Aachen Cathedral. Often referred to as the Imperial Cathedral, the church is the oldest of its kind in northern Europe. It served as the coronation site for German monarchs. You can tour the imperial throne and high altar of the mosaic-filled Palatine chapel. Then, head outside to see the dramatic Westwork, the building's western facade of staircases, niches, and bronze sculptures. Take a guided tour to see the throne and final resting place of Charlemagne. Plan your Aachen Cathedral visit and explore what else you can see and do in Aachen using our Aachen trip itinerary tool .

  • No escape from the visit of this sumptuous monument is the Cathedral. Can only be awed and impressed by this imposing building both. A thousand details call your look like the lens of your camera (it should also pay € 1 to use this right, which partially funds the ongoing renovation work...). Out stunned and skeptical. Then we are looking forward to visit the whole city!

  • Take the time to visit this lovely city and this most historic of cathedrals, where Charlemagne's legacy is clear. Make sure to take the guided tour since you can't get upstairs to the room with the chair of the Holy Roman Emperors unless you're with the tour. Well worth your time for an understanding of European history.
  • Pretty place with interesting history. Don't bother going upstairs to see the chair. It's just a stone chair. Guided tour was interesting, my favorite part were seeing the glass and coffins in the back of the church
  • The Cathedral of Aix-la-Chapelle is one of the oldest and most beautiful cathedrals in Europe and was built more than one thousand two hundred years ago. Emperor Charlemagne, one of the most important historical figures in medieval times, was buried there. If you care about medieval culture and history, a guided tour of this majestic building is mandatory.
  • Aachener Dom is the beauty of Aachen and its glorious past.
  • Wasn't planning to visit the cathedral, but gladly, friends persuaded me to go. Definitely worth it. Really great guided tour.
