Admire the impressive architectural mix of Gothic and Carolingian-Romanesque styles at Aachen Cathedral. Often referred to as the Imperial Cathedral, the church is the oldest of its kind in northern Europe. It served as the coronation site for German monarchs. You can tour the imperial throne and high altar of the mosaic-filled Palatine chapel. Then, head outside to see the dramatic Westwork, the building's western facade of staircases, niches, and bronze sculptures. Take a guided tour to see the throne and final resting place of Charlemagne. Plan your Aachen Cathedral visit and explore what else you can see and do in Aachen using our Aachen trip itinerary tool.

A magnificent ancient cathedral. The highlight of the Aachen city for sure. You must go inside to understand the magnitude of this creation.

Very nice old building. The chandelier can be found in just about every math book because of its weight distribution and chain. They cleaned the mosaics (2018) recently, so that they now are really sparkly. Enjoy the beauty as it was created by the poor peasants on the really, really dark ages.
Oh, so beautiful! I had only a few minutes to look around but it was enough to be impressed. I will return and take a proper look!
A wonderful place to be. Would recommend it to any visitor to Germany. It ha a rich history especially with the myth around the wolf and the life of charlemagne
One of the most unique and beautiful cathedrals of Europe. Built by order of Charles the Great, Emperor in the year 800AD, but then of course added to and embellished as centuries followed. There is a short video as well explaining its evolution.
From all catholic churches I saw so far (and I saw plenty in my life spam!) this is the most beautifully artistic one. Very fascinating. Astonishing mosaics at the ceilings!
