  • Visited on a foggy day, this monastery is enveloped by silence is worth the visit if you are in the area (it is a few km from Telavi). You need to ring the Bell and a gentle nun, who speaks English, accompanies the visitor to see the Church. The remaining parts of the monastery, in activity, are inaccessible.

  • On the road from Tbilisi to Telavi advise collapse on pointer and visit two famous monastic complex: old and new Shuamta monastery. Somehow on Tripadvisor with only one link, although historically and geographically it is two separate objects. First get into a new Shuamta. It's a monastery, so pay attention to schedule a visit: from 9 to 19, and the request not to enter without a person, which can cause a call to the gate. To us a couple of minutes came out one of the sisters, all is revealed and explained, diplomatically sidestepping the sharp corners of the Russian-Georgian relations, XVIII-XXI centuries. New Shuamta built Queen Tinatin in the twenties of the XVI century during his marriage with Levan. Here it monashestvovala after divorce, and here in the Temple of Virgin Mary is buried in year 1591. Tombstone has been preserved until now, it is carved the coat of arms of the Bagrationi. Among the frescoes, restored in our time of whitewashing 19-20th century, there is a picture of the couple of Levan and Tinatin. Here in the temple buried poet, winemaker, educator and father-in-law Griboyedov Alexander Chavchavadze. You will be so much more interesting to look at his gravestone if you continue going to the Museum at Tsinandali Chavchavadze. Moving on the road ahead, you find yourself in old Shuamta based apparently already in the V century, i.e. before coming to Georgia Assyrian fathers. Around the 16th century, the monastery was abandoned. Nevertheless, in its territory until our days in good condition have survived three Temple V-VII centuries, the first of which may well still compete for the title of oldest in Georgia if someday scientists seriously watchful eye on this matter.

  • Interesting place. the akhali (new) Shuamta has beautiful frescoes inside. the dzveli (old) complex is quite interesting itself but it must be restored in the interiors
