Sioni Church, Tbilisi

(4.7/5 based on 190+ reviews on the web)
Serving as Tbilisi's main Georgian Orthodox cathedral until the completion of Tsminda Sameba in 2004, Sioni Church features a history stretching back more than 1,400 years, providing insight into the spiritual history of the nation. Originally founded in the late 400s, the church has been razed and rebuilt many times; the structure that stands now likely originates from 1112, when the church was completely rebuilt during the reign of King David IV. Step inside to walk the aisles and examine the frescoes that adorn the walls. The church also houses an important relic, the cross of Saint Nino--or the Grapevine Cross--a symbol of the Georgian Orthodox Church dating from the 4th century. You can see a replica of the cross on display; the real cross is locked away. Make Sioni Church a centerpiece of your Tbilisi vacation itinerary, and find what else is worth visiting using our Tbilisi travel itinerary planner.

  • I am not too into cathedrals but Sioni Cathedral has its own charm and peacefulness that you will be impressed with the ambiance and serenity.
  • Rides, too small to be careful. However, only had for a long time head of the Orthodox Church of Georgia and some tavernas a solemn air. Believers pray incessantly, SEC Management Server, cool smells in the air with incense in the church so was the world.

  • Temple of the 6th century, but neither time was rebuilt. Here is one of the three crosses of St. Nino. He's in a great frame (icon) on the left side of the iconostasis. You can come to see and pray. Opposite the entrance to the temple, near the bus is one of the oldest town bakery, then cook a delicious pie "lobiani". But first, spiritual food, and then the Earth;)

  • Very nice church, especially at night you can enjoy the beautiful faces of its outside walls in the light of reflectors.
  • Cute small church. Very strict about visitors clothing. Theres a shop in the entrance, simple money making scam for the church.
  • Its a lovely historic church
  • This is the historical place, here is located Saint Nino's cross.
