New Athos Simoneau-Kananitsky Monastery, New Athos

4.5
#1 of 7 in Sightseeing in Abkhazia
Landmark Tourist Spot
Your first glimpse of New Athos Simoneau-Kananitsky Monastery encompasses shining golden domes rising above the surrounding forest, which runs down to the sea. Construction began in 1875; the Russian Orthodox monks who lived there built the complex. The monastery, an enclosed rectangle, surrounds the church of St. Pantaleon and the 50 m (164 ft) bell tower, which still is active today. Enter the church to view frescoed walls painted in the early 20th century, colored with gold, blues, reds, and white depicting scenes from the Bible. Walk the tiled floor and view ornate metalwork and fixtures in this large space that, during the Soviet era, was used as a hospital, storage space, tourist base, and museum. • I'll start with what we have got to the ASTA Tour company that issues with each trip the same "bonus" program, bringing you to the waterfalls, wineries and Apiary, which you may not want in 25 times. All three times we have razdolbannaja Gazelle without air conditioning, opening Windows, but with a furious driver and ' singing ' music that eviscerate all the positive emotions. Now about the monastery and Temple. I liked the view from afar, liked the architecture of the temple, but all very convenient. Next to the shrine comes a brisk trade in strong drinks that I have does not fit with the mind. On the territory of the monastery go local and tout to take in other places. How so? Who is this allowed? I really like temples, monasteries, but here not felt anything. Too many people, worth some buzz. After visiting the temple, we really have not given time to look into the street, driven into a terrible hot minibus where stank of fume and smoked cheese to take lunch in the mess hall, where sovkovuju disgusting feed.

  • Very long time dreamed to visit Abkhazia and then finally came to rest in Sochi, we were able to get to my "dreams". To say I am disappointed is an understatement. Sheer disorganization, bordering on arrogant. There is no bus schedules, no established pricing. Feeling that fare the driver takes as much as he just comes to mind. Simply inconceivable. Regarding nutrition and say nothing. The prices high, the quality of the insanely low. Certainly shows that the country does not have enough money, but that is no reason way the show and on every street corner you certainly try to shove from excursions to bottle Chachi. In general do in this country. By the way the monastery is destroyed and nothing special you won't see and feel the same way as in other places this "wonderful" country. There the usual dirty sea and quite plain vegetation. All Lakes, caves and other crap does not brighten up stay in Abkhazia.
