New Athos Simoneau-Kananitsky Monastery, New Athos

#2 of 13 in Things to do in New Athos
Your first glimpse of New Athos Simoneau-Kananitsky Monastery encompasses shining golden domes rising above the surrounding forest, which runs down to the sea. Construction began in 1875; the Russian Orthodox monks who lived there built the complex. The monastery, an enclosed rectangle, surrounds the church of St. Pantaleon and the 50 m (164 ft) bell tower, which still is active today. Enter the church to view frescoed walls painted in the early 20th century, colored with gold, blues, reds, and white depicting scenes from the Bible. Walk the tiled floor and view ornate metalwork and fixtures in this large space that, during the Soviet era, was used as a hospital, storage space, tourist base, and museum. A visit to New Athos Simoneau-Kananitsky Monastery represents just the start of the adventure when you use our New Athos itinerary site to plot your vacation.

  • An amazing combination, when almost all in new Athos paid)) are religious or not, the place is highly recommended for a visit. Very beautiful interior decoration and architecture. Bonus eats a small viewing platform nearby. Upstairs (which is not just climb steep), you can buy a drink and a snack, the toilet is also available. In the monastery strict dress code: girls-shawl + skirt, boys trousers (shorts). For "unprepared" at the entrance, you can take the desired clothes absolutely free. Candles bought near the place where clothes, in the cellar.

  • This is where the spectacular scenery of the surrounding sea and monastery park. Parking here is free of charge for an hour, but I think this time enough for you to catch all the view. A place of spiritual power you feel immediately, even though the abundance of tourists. Here, as in other places Abkhazia, better to come in the morning. After lunch a lot of tour groups. If you came, I advise you to go on a range of previously armed with guide. Place clearly deserves attention.

  • Now, after visiting many other temples of Diveevo Russia and the world, the magnitude of delight from the monastery greatly calmed down. Now you see, that is not so much "on the soul". And their many ... This time it was not pleasant. Maybe for those who for the first time-not bad ...

  • As would be a shame, but no longer truly orthodox temple. "Kuban Archdiocese of the Russian Orthodox Church forbade the faithful attend services at the Georgian monastery in Abkhazia, the current leadership which it refers to as schismatics. It is stated in the official statement issued by the Archdiocese. New-Athos monastery was built on the personal funds of the Russian imperial family, and subsequently restored through financial assistance from Russia. In this regard, the statement referred to as "regrettable" the fact that now the monastery may not pray to the faithful of the Russian Orthodox Church. "the monastery itself is beautiful, the restoration work under way since Soviet times. But over the past 10 years, progress, no I haven't noticed. In my opinion only becomes worse.

  • The temple is not Orthodox. Strange as it may seem. Belongs to a sect of otshhipencev. Inside the bench as Catholics. And icons as the Orthodox. Keep this in mind. And AFAIK so. But more interesting than the outside inside.

  • Admission is free, parking is available at the top, women need to cover the head and legs of the scarves, men in shorts is not recommended. Issued at the monastery, but may not be enough. A magnificent place! Very nice view from the mountain. Be sure to read before history if you're without a guide))) definitely worth a go!

  • Old working monastery. Worth a visit if you like monasteries, the rest is not necessarily anything special there. You can go in skirts, t-shirts and shorts, at the entrance give out special capes.
