New Athos Simoneau-Kananitsky Monastery, New Athos
(4.5/5 based on 280+ reviews on the web)
Your first glimpse of New Athos Simoneau-Kananitsky Monastery encompasses shining golden domes rising above the surrounding forest, which runs down to the sea. Construction began in 1875; the Russian Orthodox monks who lived there built the complex. The monastery, an enclosed rectangle, surrounds the church of St. Pantaleon and the 50 m (164 ft) bell tower, which still is active today. Enter the church to view frescoed walls painted in the early 20th century, colored with gold, blues, reds, and white depicting scenes from the Bible. Walk the tiled floor and view ornate metalwork and fixtures in this large space that, during the Soviet era, was used as a hospital, storage space, tourist base, and museum. • Rode in new Athos in September 2016. The monastery is visible from anywhere in the city! Very beautiful! Unfortunately, it is not in very good condition, but impressive! Inside the frescoes is stunning! Exciting upgrades to the monastery on the Royal path and the path of sinners. When you stand near the monastery-udivitel'nij view of the city and the sea!

  • We got to new Athos with excursion and I can say honestly that I didn't expect to see. The majestic monastery, but in such serious decline is not good at all. Visible place obvalivshejsja plaster on walls is not decorated with frescoes. The crowd of illiterate tourists leave their mark on its way in the form of inscriptions or scratching/drawings. Not like to draw their attention, but it's almost not possible. Ensemble itself and the surrounding territory is permeated with the spirit of history and reverence that stumble on tent merchants souvenirs in the best traditions of the Black Sea. Definitely worth a visit, to touch the shrine and understand how intensely human vices prevail over beauty and spirituality.

  • It was a perfect place for selected properties of the monastery-it can be seen from different points of new Athos. Beautiful from every angle! Inside you can visit only the Central Temple. This time unpleasantly surprised obsypavshiesja painting the walls and ceiling. A few years ago everything was intact. Whether poorly reconstructed or problems with the ventilation. A very interesting painting-in the Byzantine style.
