New Athos Simoneau-Kananitsky Monastery, New Athos

#2 of 13 in Things to do in New Athos
Your first glimpse of New Athos Simoneau-Kananitsky Monastery encompasses shining golden domes rising above the surrounding forest, which runs down to the sea. Construction began in 1875; the Russian Orthodox monks who lived there built the complex. The monastery, an enclosed rectangle, surrounds the church of St. Pantaleon and the 50 m (164 ft) bell tower, which still is active today. Enter the church to view frescoed walls painted in the early 20th century, colored with gold, blues, reds, and white depicting scenes from the Bible. Walk the tiled floor and view ornate metalwork and fixtures in this large space that, during the Soviet era, was used as a hospital, storage space, tourist base, and museum. A visit to New Athos Simoneau-Kananitsky Monastery represents just the start of the adventure when you use our New Athos itinerary site to plot your vacation.

  • Russian Monastery founded by monks from Mount Athos. Set of six temples that are open were not the whole story. The main church of St. Panteleimon is very beautiful. Memorable architecture surrounded by forested mountains-image "Russian Athos". Near the grotto of St. Simon Canonite who preached the teachings of Christ in Abkhazia.

  • A beautiful architectural ensemble, here is a very beautiful, magnificent views of the Black Sea. Very beautiful nature and especially the flowering plants. People who want to visit this place need to get ready for a long rise (approximately 1.5 km). But impressions of this place is worth it!

  • Wonderful beautiful place. I'm not a religious man, but I liked it. Very atmospheric. The photo view from the observation deck at the monastery. Also I advise to visit Novoafonskuju cave.

  • As would be a shame, but no longer truly orthodox temple. "Kuban Archdiocese of the Russian Orthodox Church forbade the faithful attend services at the Georgian monastery in Abkhazia, the current leadership which it refers to as schismatics. It is stated in the official statement issued by the Archdiocese. New-Athos monastery was built on the personal funds of the Russian imperial family, and subsequently restored through financial assistance from Russia. In this regard, the statement referred to as "regrettable" the fact that now the monastery may not pray to the faithful of the Russian Orthodox Church. "the monastery itself is beautiful, the restoration work under way since Soviet times. But over the past 10 years, progress, no I haven't noticed. In my opinion only becomes worse.

  • The temple is not Orthodox. Strange as it may seem. Belongs to a sect of otshhipencev. Inside the bench as Catholics. And icons as the Orthodox. Keep this in mind. And AFAIK so. But more interesting than the outside inside.
