Shio-Mgvime Monastery, Mtskheta

#5 of 7 in Things to do in Mtskheta
Admire vividly colored Orthodox fresco paintings at Shio-Mgvime Monastery, a medieval monastic complex on the northern bank of the Mtkvari River. Built in the 6th century, the main St. John the Baptist church features an octagonal dome erected over a cross foundation. Backed by steep cliffs fringed with lush vegetation, the monastery stands on a plateau accessed by a paved pathway. The secluded monastic complex, located near Mtskheta. Its history is linked to one of 13 Assyrian fathers-Shio Mgvimskim (today are open to visiting only 4 of 13). On the icons you can find on the smoke coming out of his hand. Up to the Temple of the Virgin lead step, so recovery may not be available to people with disabilities. Fifteen hundred years in the Church relics Shio, which almost completely during the Soviet era were burned. Tourists are few. If you stand facing the monastery, at the top of the mountain on the right there is a small chapel built in the 12nd century, but long climb. The monastery itself is interesting as pilgrims and tourists alike.

From Tbilisi to go around thirty minutes. The monastery is truly away from civilization. On the back side it is sheltering a huge rock. There are holes in it resembles large niches. visually, the monastery is very old. during the visit held service for the deceased.

Before the monastery we travelled by taxi. Public transportation to the monastery. The place is picturesque, the monastery is on the mountain, at an impasse. Around very nicely. Tourists are few, the monks are friendly: on a hot day offered to all travellers water. Very glad that I was able to visit this place)))))

The first monastic community at this place was founded by the 6th-century monk Shio (Geo:შიო), one of the Thirteen Assyrian Fathers who came to Georgia as Christian missionaries
