Jvari Church, Mtskheta
(4.8/5 based on 420+ reviews on the web)
Situated at the confluence of the Mtkvari and Aragvi rivers, World Heritage Site Jvari Church sits alone atop a desolate, windswept mountaintop. A Georgian Orthodox monastery founded in the 6th century, the site is where St. Nino converted King Miriam to Christianity (according to tradition) and erected a cross on an existing pagan temple. The current church is believed to have been built between 590 and 605 CE. Explore this site to get a sense of the religious history of the nation. Attempt to read the inscription on the facade, which is said to date the structure by naming the principle builders involved in the construction. • We visited as if in the last century. Georgia has returned to us in the Soviet Union and especially in 90 years, but despite this (very muddy and pretty poorly) from the trip we are delighted in spite of all the hardships people are quite affable and hospitable nature is very very beautiful.

  • The only problem we encountered is the access to the monastery. Especially in winter, when the roads are icy and snow-covered, the trip can take from Tbilisi. However, the panorama of Mtskheta is breathtaking. Location of buildings at the top also makes cold, blowing in the wind effectively makes sightseeing.

  • One of the best places to experience the Georgia. The view from Jvari monastery, a lookout is indescribable: place two rivers merging into one envelop a mountain and small-town of Mtskheta (the old capital of Georgia), where proudly Svetitskhoveli Cathedral-Georgia (UNESCO World Heritage). Delight is guaranteed! Recommend immediately after heading back to Mtskheta Dzhvari and walk there remaining half necessarily visiting the Svetitskhoveli Cathedral.
