The Cathedral of the Dormition, or the Kutaisi Cathedral, more commonly known as Bagrati Cathedral (ბაგრატი; ბაგრატის ტაძარი, or Bagratis tadzari), is an 11th-century cathedral in the city of Kutaisi, in the Imereti region of Georgia. A masterpiece of the medieval Georgian architecture, the cathedral suffered heavy damage throughout centuries and was reconstructed to its present state through a gradual process starting in the 1950s, with major conservation works concluding in 2012. A distinct landmark in the scenery of central Kutaisi, the cathedral rests on the Ukimerioni Hill.HistoryBagrati Cathedral was built in the early years of the 11th century, during the reign of King Bagrat III, due to which it was called "Bagrati", i.e., Bagrat’s cathedral. An inscription on the north wall reveals that the floor was laid in "chronicon 223", i.e., 1003. In 1692, it was devastated in an explosion by Ottoman troops who had invaded the Kingdom of Imereti. The incident caused the cupola and ceiling to collapse.Conservation and restoration works, as well as archaeological studies at the Cathedral began in the 1950s under the leadership of a Georgian architect Vakhtang Tsintsadze. The restoration works headed by Tsintsadze were divided into six stages and continued for several decades through 1994. That same year in 1994 Bagrati Cathedral, together with the Gelati Monastery, was included in UNESCO's World Heritage Site list as a single entity. In 2001, ownership of the cathedral was transferred from the Georgian state to the Georgian Orthodox Church. It is presently of limited use for religious services, but attracts many pilgrims and tourists. It is also frequently used as a symbol of the city of Kutaisi, being one of its main tourist attractions.

As for the city itself, is one of the major attractions, view from the top of the Hill and the possibility to watch the running of the temple. I was in the evening, a few people, soothing atmosphere, the opportunity to do nice pictures and watch everything closely. Recommend

The first convent built in Galati by King David the Builder, including the beautiful church with frescoes with stories of the old and New Testaments, which ה"אוניברסיטה" for higher education, including a building with hollow tree by pumping water through trap and extracting. A third area of interest here is the gate that was once the Central tomb of King David IV of Georgia who wanted the whole place will go to his grave. First seen here both Holy Cross loaded down. The second church in grati, first dynasty of Georgian Kings her out later David and Tamar, the Church and reconstructed after the ambulance blew it, there's an elevator to the top floor in the church grounds also excluded from the list. The Church is very beautiful view on cotaisi

It is a church that lives. It has been restored from ruins, since one can expect much old preserved. We recommend some restraint compared to the singing and dancing group that lurks outside the Church on orders.

A UNESCO world heritage site that is an easy walk from the centre of Kutaisi. Just look up and you will see it. This means you get good views from the church itself. It's better on the outside then the inside but definitely with the stroll up.

Interesting combination of ancient and modern times. Though the cathedral is not as mesmerizing as it was, you can enjoy breathtaking views of Kutaisi.

A must see place and totally worth the walk up to the top of the hill. The view from there is amazing.
