Uplistsiche Cave Town, Gori

(4.7/5 based on 320 reviews on the web)
World Heritage Site Uplistsiche Cave Town, meaning "the lord's fortress," offers a chance to visit an ancient, sacred site mentioned in early religious texts. Rock-cut structures from the early Iron Age through to the late Middle Ages make up these cave-like buildings that bring together pagan and Christian architectures. The complex was mostly abandoned by the 14th century when it was sacked by raiding Mongol forces. Some highlights of the town include a Hellenistic amphitheater and a church built upon the foundations of a sun god's temple. Explore the tunnels and building, and seek out an English-speaking guide who will give you the history for a negotiated fee. • Very beautiful and unusual! If possible, visit during warmer weather (we were at the beginning of March and wind beating down with cold feet and distracted)

  • This place is spectacular with wonderful history of civilization associated with it. It fits well with a trip to Gori with the Stalin museum as it is very close. There is a vast complex of caves on the...  more »
  • The place is interesting, especially if you have not seen the other cave cities. We strongly recommend you use the services of a guide, because the Uplistsikhe no you won't find object definitions (there are only rare nameplates premises). We had no luck-30 December, all guides were dismantled, and had to explore the city on your own. Taxi from Gori to Uplistsikhe and back and waiting one hour cost us 25 lari.

  • Beautiful place. The whole place has a truly ancient feel.
  • Nice city in rocks, a bit demolished. Go there in early morning or late afternoon as it gets hot during the day in summer.
  • Wow. Incredible. Definitely worth visiting (esp in the evening when it's cooler and there are fewer crowds) and the information centre is informative, providing interesting background
  • Large ancient town. It was interesting to explore. Surprisingly it was also a huge success for preschoolers who enjoyed climbing to every possible spot.
  • Ancient residence of Georgian kings, built entirely in rock caves. Has decent infrastructure around it and nice guides to listen to. More thant affordable tickets and easy to navigate.
