Mt. Teurafaatiu, Maupiti Island

(50 reviews on the web)
Outdoor Activity
Take the challenging hike up Mt. Teurafaatiu for extensive, uninterrupted views of Maupiti and the surrounding islands of French Polynesia. With an elevation of 372 m (1,220 ft), the peak is the highest on the island, and provides visitors with clear sights of the lagoon and the reef as they enjoy a well-earned rest. You will reach the first viewpoint after around ten minutes, giving you the chance to head back down or carry on up to the top depending on your hiking experience and weather conditions. The track gets steep in places, and visitors must be prepared for rock scrambling and rope sections. You won't need a guide for this well-posted trail, but do note that you should not attempt the hike in wet conditions as the ground is slippery and dangerous. Mt. Teurafaatiu is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our international travel planner, Maupiti Island Edition.

  • My husband pretty much forced me to go on this hike. Prior to the trip, I read about how difficult the hike was and wanted absolutely no part of it. Our boat captain told us that the hike should take ...  more »
  • First of all, I recommend this hike for children and the elderly because of places on ascension that are quite difficult (several places where we're standing with a rope to pull himself or to keep in the descent). Also provide good hiking shoes (not tap). I did this hike early in the morning (starting around 7:45 of the village from the stairs after the restaurant) for a total of 1 hour and 15 minutes to mount. The Sun was at the meeting and it was hot, plan to water as well as a snack in case where. But the game is worth the candle, amazing life at the top, and will not be disappointed.

  • Everything has been said in previous posts about the beauty of the site and the view at the top. So it's just to add some tips: good shoes (perfect tennis), Cap hat, sunscreen and especially a lot of water because the main difficulty of this hike is heat, the heat of the Sun and that of the black rocks to climb at times so go early. Weather: abstain if it rains, very slippery ground and clogged Summit. The last 100 meters are equipped with strings as rather steep. 1 hour, 1 hour and a half, local champions put 19 minutes, they climb while running!
