Mt. Teurafaatiu, Maupiti Island

(5/5 based on 45+ reviews on the web)
Take the challenging hike up Mt. Teurafaatiu for extensive, uninterrupted views of Maupiti and the surrounding islands of French Polynesia. With an elevation of 372 m (1,220 ft), the peak is the highest on the island, and provides visitors with clear sights of the lagoon and the reef as they enjoy a well-earned rest. You will reach the first viewpoint after around ten minutes, giving you the chance to head back down or carry on up to the top depending on your hiking experience and weather conditions. The track gets steep in places, and visitors must be prepared for rock scrambling and rope sections. You won't need a guide for this well-posted trail, but do note that you should not attempt the hike in wet conditions as the ground is slippery and dangerous. Mt. Teurafaatiu is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our international travel planner, Maupiti Island Edition.

  • Everything has been said in previous posts about the beauty of the site and the view at the top. So it's just to add some tips: good shoes (perfect tennis), Cap hat, sunscreen and especially a lot of water because the main difficulty of this hike is heat, the heat of the Sun and that of the black rocks to climb at times so go early. Weather: abstain if it rains, very slippery ground and clogged Summit. The last 100 meters are equipped with strings as rather steep. 1 hour, 1 hour and a half, local champions put 19 minutes, they climb while running!

  • Magical hiking with an extraordinary view of the lagoon of Maupiti. Being alone I was accompanied by the only local guide: "Albert" on advice of my pension papahani and I can tell you that I do not regret it! I strongly advice you to make you accompanied by him if you are alone or even more if you have Vertigo. During the hike you local stories, you sing songs, learn about plants and many other things still, the difficulty of the hike is felt not with him! It adapts to you and at your own pace. The hike takes another dimension when you are with him. A 100% local guide who has always lived in Maupiti and known to all his "Prince Albert of Maupiti" name. A kindness, generosity and authenticity without equal! A Yes but with Albert!

  • Very nice hike in the middle of the mango trees, up to the top. It's very steep from the outset, 1 hour and 15 minutes to make the ascent, good walking shoes are mandatory. Provide water, sunscreen... and still water! The Summit offers views of the translucent lagoon up to Raiatea and Tahaa. A must to do in Maupiti.
