Mount Otemanu, Bora Bora

4.9
#2 of 13 in Nature in French Polynesia
Volcano Mountain
Head up to the base of Mount Otemanu, an impressive natural monument whose volcanic rock peak marks the highest point on Bora Bora. While the brittle, jagged, 727 m (2,385 ft) summit is too inhospitable to be accessed, you can hike or take a 4x4 trip up to the base of the mountain. The latter option remains the most popular, because of the jungle's density and the difficulty of the walk. Look up at the black, rugged top of the mountain (visible across the island) as it stands in sharp contrast to the lush greens and bright blues of most of the landscape. Put Mount Otemanu on your schedule, and learn what else deserves a visit by using our Bora Bora itinerary builder.

Where to stay in Bora Bora

The quintessential Bora Bora experience, a favorite among honeymooning couples, is to stay at a luxury resort, in a thatched bungalow sitting just above the tranquil waves of a turquoise lagoon. Such opulence doesn't come cheap, but shoestring travelers do have other affordable options here. Pensions (family-run boarding houses) offer the best value, making up for any lack of extravagance by leaving you plenty of money to spend exploring the idyllic island. Hotels in Vaitape offer a middle ground between budget-saving pensions and splurging on a resort.
