Leopard Rays Trench, Bora Bora

4.6
#4 of 13 in Nature in Society Islands
Enter the warm waters of Leopard Rays Trench for the chance to swim with rays and sharks. See the impressive creatures through the crystal-clear water, and step out into the lagoon--accompanied by a guide--to feed and pet the friendly animals. As they pass over the white sand at the bottom of the water you get great photo opportunities, full of contrast and clarity. The rays' gentle nature makes for an exciting experience that will win over even the timid and reluctant. • We had a day at Bora Bora from the ship, Celebrity Solstice. We negotiated a small group (12) outrigger tour around the island for 4 hours ($us60) with Maui, a lovely young man who runs a business wit...  more »
  • If you have never done this before it is something you won't want to miss. Not a lot of places in the world where you can get up close and personal with a Ray.  more »
  • This immersion with the rays and small sharks remains a highlight of the trip, swimming is safe. The sensation of the grey lines coming to be petted is unforgettable and sharks that turn us around 1.5 m reinforce this moment of emotion. Leopard rays do not approach but you can attend the flight in open water which is majestic. Attention to choose their provider, choose one that doesn't give food to animals, there is! And avoid, in particular, those giving bread (starch is a poison for fish!) Even if it seems "tourist" this remains a must experience!

Where to stay in Bora Bora

The quintessential Bora Bora experience, a favorite among honeymooning couples, is to stay at a luxury resort, in a thatched bungalow sitting just above the tranquil waves of a turquoise lagoon. Such opulence doesn't come cheap, but shoestring travelers do have other affordable options here. Pensions (family-run boarding houses) offer the best value, making up for any lack of extravagance by leaving you plenty of money to spend exploring the idyllic island. Hotels in Vaitape offer a middle ground between budget-saving pensions and splurging on a resort.
