Camp De La Transportation, Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni

Take an eerie and mysterious tour of Camp De La Transportation, once the largest prison in French Guiana. Take the guided tour and learn about how convicts arrived by the boatful in 20 day trips across the Atlantic during the 19th century, and explore the cell rumored to belong to Henri Charrière. You can still find the infamous convicted felon's nickname "Papillon" inscribed on the wall. Be aware that while some tours are conducted in English, a lot of the staff speak little of the language. Put Camp De La Transportation into our Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni journey builder app and find out what's close by, where to stay, and where to head next.

  • This camp is to visit to learn about the fate of the convicts. Detention conditions were terrible. Once their sentence is over, they could not leave Guyana before completing a stay the same.

  • If you find yourself in Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni this is an obvious place to visit. We did not elect to take a tour but they depart from the Tourist Office. English is not offered every day so you will need to check. Otherwise, we had a fine time just walking around and were able to read enough on Wikipedia that we felt we got the full value.
  • A nice tour offered by the tourist office! Bonus: visit the Museum really full that teaches us the visit - art and history blend pleasantly through portraits carefully chosen and nicely diversified. A beautiful heritage to discover!
