Fort Ceperou, Cayenne

#2 of 8 in Sightseeing in Cayenne
Landmark Tourist Spot
Climb up to Fort Ceperou and explore what’s left of this centuries-old fortification. A bell tower and a few fort walls are all that remain, perched up on top of one of the highest points in the town. This spot offers some of the best views of the city. The fort's remains lie in ruins, giving the site an atmosphere of an aging fortress that has seen its fair share of battles. Founded in 1643 on a hill dominating the Cayenne River, fort Cépérou is the point of origin of the city. Given the historic nature of this site, we can lament the low development, not even an explanatory panel... The site is worth by some fortifications in stone, a sort of pinnacle of wood and a nice view on the river and the city of Cayenne. The remains are found near the tourist office, 5 min on the spot are sufficient.

It is true that it is not very touristy but it is not less important to visit somewhere. What for? For the history of the colonization of Guyana, for its location, facing to the sea, but also for the view back on the city of Cayenne. It's a quiet place, with a small parking lot below. Is there way to make great pictures.

The most beautiful view of Cayenne and the Cayenne River on the other side. But strong in ruins which may collapse, it is a shame... 😮

visit not very recent one afternoon of Summer 2009 before renovations. armed with a little courage it's worth to go there on foot for the view of the city and partly on Cayenne River side low barracks.
