The medieval castle of Vitré is definitely the main decoration of the city. It was built in the early 11th century same Knight Rivallonom Le Vikerom. It was originally a small wooden. Grandson of Robert I, Rivallona decided to build a new stone, around which the city started to grow. In the 15th century, the Castle served not only defensive functions, but also became more comfortable to stay for its owners, when were built the Chapel and the gallery in the Renaissance style. During the religious wars of the 16th century the castle was the stronghold of Protestants and withstood a five-month siege. In the 17th century, the barons of Vitré, left for Paris to the Royal Court, and their possession gradually began to fall into disrepair. Then a fire completely destroyed the residential apartments, and the northern part of the castle was used as a prison, and then the barracks. At the end of the 19th century began the restoration of the Castle, and it put on the list of historical monuments. The courtyard you can enter for free, museum ticket worth € 6, box office are to the right of the entrance. Together with the ticket inspection plan is given (in French), which should be returned on exit. Liked the fact that you can visit the Castle, without obligatory excursions. Walked in all alone on a weekday there is practically no tourists here. The visit starts with the Tower of St. Lawrence (extreme left). To login you need to bring your ticket with the barcode to the scanner, located on the door. The exposition of the Museum is a small but pleasant. Interiors and atmosphere of the past centuries. With towers overlooking the old town. In the northern part of the castle is the Town Hall, its examination is not possible.

It is the main attraction of the city of Vitré. From the Esplanade that leads to the castle there is a breathtaking view of the fortress. Freely access to the courtyard, as in the offices of the City Hall are located. Must not be missed on a trip to Britain!
