The Arboretum de Balaine is a historic arboretum located in Villeneuve-sur-Allier, Allier, Auvergne, France. It is open daily in the warmer months; an admission fee is charged. The arboretum was created in 1804 by Aglaia Adanson, daughter of naturalist Michel Adanson, as an English-style park on surrounding a mansion inherited her father. She formed an arboretum of exotic species, following the example of Joséphine de Beauharnais at the Château de Malmaison in Rueil. The family has continued to own the park since its creation, and describe it as the oldest private botanical park in France. It was classified a historical monument in 1993.Today the arboretum contains about 2500 taxa planted across 200 years, including Acer palmatum, Cypress, Fagus, Carya, Liquidambar, Nyssa, Quercus, and Sassafras, as well as azaleas, camellias, davidias, magnolias, rhododendrons, viburnums, a fine collection of Cornus, and old roses and hydrangeas. Noteworthy specimens include a 36-meter giant sequoia planted in 1856, a Sequoia sempervirens, a 45-meter bald cypress from Louisiana planted in 1822, and a 30-meter tupelo .Choose to start, finish, or center your holiday on a trip to Arboretum de Balaine by using our Villeneuve-sur-Allier holiday planner.

Nous avons adoré notre visite de l’Arboretum de Balaine, qui mérite à lui seul un voyage dans le Bourbonnais, à quelques kilomètres de Moulins. Si vous aimez la quiétude des jardins anglais, cet arbor... more »We loved our tour of the Whaile Arboretum, which is worth only a trip in Bourbonnais, a few kilometres from mills. If you enjoy the tranquility of the English garden, the arboretum will delight you beyond your expectations. Indeed, you will find a worthy of the most beautiful gardens of Cornwall Park to the South West of England. Classified remarkable garden, the arboretum of the Whaile Castle is a beautiful English garden of 20 hectares created in 1804 by Aglaia Adanson. This Park brings together more than 3500 species of plants, including a remarkable collection of maples and several bicentenaries trees: sequoias, cypresses, pines... The Park is beautifully maintained by the heirs of Aglaé Adanson, who welcomed us with much kindness. We promised to come back to experience the Park in the spring and fall. Indeed, a simple 'Google Images' detour shows that this park is a real plant fireworks in all seasons and to come back often to enjoy the beauty of all these plant paintings. It is surely one of the most beautiful private gardens of France...
L'accueil est antipathique au possible. À la limite de la grossièreté! Le plan de visite est mal fait et très imprécis. Le château et l'arboretum sont mal entretenus. Les étiquettes sur les arbres son... more »The reception is unfriendly as possible. The limit of rudeness! Tour map is poorly done and very inaccurate. The Castle and the arboretum are poorly maintained. The labels on the trees are often non-existent. It's a shame because the site is beautiful and deserves a real investment to make it attractive. Great just for the walk but then the entry is too expensive just for a ride.
Oui , en réponse à votre demande , je suis bien allé a L'Arboretum de Balaine au printemps avec des amis de Bretagne . Nous pensions passer un bon moment , ( étant de la région et en ayant entendu par... more »In response to your request, I am well a Whaile Arboretum in spring with friends from Britain. We thought a good time (being in the region and in having heard...), I love flowers, castles and great houses, but it is with great dissatisfaction, no maintenance, the aisles nonexistent and dirty or muddy (watch your shoes), personnel (the owner), very unpleasant for anyone who is in contact with the customer, finally in short... There are better as a place to relax. A must visit place in our area is undoubtedly the Castle and the Park FLORAL of APPREMONT. Damage because of plant varieties that the castle would be set values with staff competent and nature lovers and not a person as currently who thinks that his trade of guest rooms. Sincere greetings to you, dear travelers.
