Fort Saint-Andre is a 13th-century fortified castle on a rocky outcrop above the Rhône River. The castle served as a formidable fortress, as well as a symbol of French power. Explore the classic medieval castle gatehouse, where two imposing battlement-topped round towers flank the gate. Head up to the top of the ramparts for a view of the villages and the surrounding countryside. This well-preserved fortress is on the official list of French historic monuments. Très belle visite, pour découvrir Avignon de l’autre côté du Rhône. Parcours de visite très bien pensé. Possibility of rate cut using the Pass (common to the two towns of Villeneuve-les-Avignon and Avignon). The town itself is worth the trip!
Despite the closure of many empty rooms and gardens, this fort has magnificent panoramas, and pretty little treasures.
Idéalement couplé avec une visite de la Chartreuse (billet groupé), le fort offre une vue magnifique sur tout Avignon et Villeneuve. Personne par cette douce journée de février, le fort pour nous tout... more »Ideally coupled with a visit to the Charterhouse (group ticket), the fort offers a wonderful view on all Avignon and Villeneuve. Nobody by this sweet February day, the fort all to ourselves, with the possibility to stroll and try magnificent acoustic all vaulted (!) rooms. The garden and the Abbey were unfortunately closed and under construction, but we do not regret the detour.
A great day out. Catch the train to Avignon walk to the post office and catch the bus over the Rhone. Very attractive gardens and an interesting hermit grotto with a long history. The day I went the Mistral was blowing really hard so walking along the battlements was even more exciting. One of my photos show the bullet holes from some WW2 engagement, even more history. I bit hard to read but the wall paintings of viking long ships which must have sailed up the Phone is a definitely worth the entrance fee. Oh and you leave the crowds behind.....
We got a nice walk around and inside the fort. Well preserved, the view to Avignon is outstanding !
Lovely experience. Lovely garden and great view. Not too busy most of the times. At night also great
Lovely day out in a castle designed with practicality in mind, very different. Bring sensible shoes and water though.
Loved this visit... beautiful gardens and sweet silence in the hilltop. Beautiful view of Avingnon as well.
