Fort du Mont Alban, Villefranche-sur-Mer
Categories: Landmarks, Tourist Spots
For some of the finest views of the Provencal coast and countryside, hike uphill to Fort du Mont Alban. Constructed in the 1550s, the stone fortress once formed part of an extensive network designed to protect Nice from possible attacks from the sea. Today, the well-preserved remains of the imposing citadel serve as one of the region's major tourist attractions. A great day-trip idea for visitors staying in nearby Nice, the fortress offers unobstructed views from a height of more than 200 m (650 ft) above sea level. On a clear day you can see as far away as distant Corsica. The highlight of the visit is to walk the waterside path around the outside of the wall between the port and the old town.
I printed off a walk from the internet to take us up here - it was a fabulous trail, up the Escaliers Campo Quadro, but be warned, it's not for the faint hearted... took us the next 2 days to recover!... read more »
Es handelt sich um eine eher kleine Festungsanlage. Alles ist sehr sauber und gepflegt. Den Besuchern werden kostenlose Eintritte zu kleinen, aber mit Liebe gestalteten Museen angeboten. It's a rather small fortress. Everything is very clean and well kept. Despite this Fort can not be visited, however the area is exceptional. The view is gorgeous and, we saw Monaco and Italy on one side and Nice, and the Alps on the other one.You can jogg, play petanque and more . It’s perfectly well preserved and worth a quick visit as there are few places comparable in Europe because of the spectacular viewing from top and bottom. Visit. *****
Great view from there. A must excursion when in Nice.
You can't go in but it's a nice walk up to the top and it's quite quiet.
Really love the view up here. Just a shame that the fort isn't open to the public.
Manrico TennerThe old fortress area invites for pleasant strolling and boasts beautiful Panoramblicken on the Côte d'Azur. Clear recommendation for a more relaxing nice experience.show original
