Chapelle du Rosaire, Vence
(3.7/5 based on 380+ reviews on the web)
A masterpiece designed by Henri Matisse, Chapelle du Rosaire is a monument of sacred art. The then-crippled artist designed the L-shaped church at the request of his former nurse, who had become a Dominican nun. Take time to examine the artist's various works and favorite objects, including stained glass, murals, stations of the cross, ceramics, objects of worship, and vestments. The structure is unassuming from the front--until you notice the 12 m (39 ft) crescent-adorned cross rising from the white and blue tiled roof. Stop in the gallery to learn about the chapel's design and construction from 1949 to 1951. Make Chapelle du Rosaire a centerpiece of your Vence vacation itinerary, and find what else is worth visiting using our Vence itinerary planner.

  • MATISSE became mystical after picking up a serious surgical procedure, imagine finance and conceives of to-Z this Chapel including the liturgical costumes and objects. His illness had considerably weaken because it took four years what a child would be penciling in four hours... As for the chasubles of the ready they are closer to the wraps than ecclesiastical clothes... You will hardly find the chapel because indications are rare (as if the municipality wanted to overshadow the visit) finally 6€ 50... it is obviously excessive. If we compare with the work of Chagall in Mainz, similar in design and mysticism, what success of Chagall (and free).

  • Great experience to participate in Sunday's exhibition in the chapelle du Rosaire. The priest knows his congregation by name and asked for the rest of us, which comes in from. When the light falls through the beautiful glass Windows and room great. We ended the experience with a visit to the Matisse museum in Nice, where you can view sketches up the Chapel and the decoration.

  • Matisse's beautiful chapel is a study in not only divinity but also how art can set apart the mundane and elevate it to a level of beauty.

  • Beautiful and tranquil place to pray/reflect and meditate. Combination of colours and shapes create a calm and soothing atmosphere.
  • While Matisse was a master of minimalism, this chapel takes it to the extreme. Beside a couple painted walls, there isn't much of Matisse here. Not worth the price of admission. There is a good view of Vence though from the garden.
  • Amazing to visit
  • I think photography should be allowed bearing in mind the admission charge
  • the simplicity and love that Mattise put into this work of art, hold a special place in my mind forever. What a beautiful experience along our tour of artist homes.
