Chapelle du Rosaire, Vence

Art Museum
A masterpiece designed by Henri Matisse, Chapelle du Rosaire is a monument of sacred art. The then-crippled artist designed the L-shaped church at the request of his former nurse, who had become a Dominican nun. Take time to examine the artist's various works and favorite objects, including stained glass, murals, stations of the cross, ceramics, objects of worship, and vestments. The structure is unassuming from the front--until you notice the 12 m (39 ft) crescent-adorned cross rising from the white and blue tiled roof. Stop in the gallery to learn about the chapel's design and construction from 1949 to 1951. Make Chapelle du Rosaire a centerpiece of your Vence vacation itinerary, and find what else is worth visiting using our Vence itinerary planner.

  • It is the major late work of Matisse. The entire work of the master, there are designs cut to the choice of the monochromes of the stained glass windows. There is always a present nun who made the comment of the visit but only if asked. It is very interesting, especially for one of the stations of the cross. Worth, deserves to go to Vence wouldn't what to visit the chapel.

  • V disappointed to find this closed on Monday 28 March after a long bus trip from Nice. Had made extensive internet checks that all said it was open. The local Tourist Office said the Nuns have cut out...  more »
  • The Chapel is beautiful and the liturgical furnishings designed by Matisse are fascinating. The ticket is very expensive (well 8 euros), with no discounts for over 65 expected normally in France. Forbidden to take pictures in the chapel as well without strobes (overseer several rude) and do not understand why or rather the only reason understandable is to push you into purchasing pictures at the store. For 8 euro manco make you go round the outside of the chapel. The beauty of Matisse is a little frayed from commercial exploitation.

  • Beautiful and tranquil place to pray/reflect and meditate. Combination of colours and shapes create a calm and soothing atmosphere.
  • While Matisse was a master of minimalism, this chapel takes it to the extreme. Beside a couple painted walls, there isn't much of Matisse here. Not worth the price of admission. There is a good view of Vence though from the garden.
  • Amazing to visit
  • I think photography should be allowed bearing in mind the admission charge
  • the simplicity and love that Mattise put into this work of art, hold a special place in my mind forever. What a beautiful experience along our tour of artist homes.
