Chapelle du Rosaire, Vence

(3.7/5 based on 380+ reviews on the web)
A masterpiece designed by Henri Matisse, Chapelle du Rosaire is a monument of sacred art. The then-crippled artist designed the L-shaped church at the request of his former nurse, who had become a Dominican nun. Take time to examine the artist's various works and favorite objects, including stained glass, murals, stations of the cross, ceramics, objects of worship, and vestments. The structure is unassuming from the front--until you notice the 12 m (39 ft) crescent-adorned cross rising from the white and blue tiled roof. Stop in the gallery to learn about the chapel's design and construction from 1949 to 1951. Make Chapelle du Rosaire a centerpiece of your Vence vacation itinerary, and find what else is worth visiting using our Vence itinerary planner.

  • It is by visiting the Matisse Museum in Nice that we had an urge to visit the chapel of the Rosary. We were not disappointed. Even the layman cannot but be struck by the spirituality of the place. Thanks to the (beautiful) Helen for the guided tour of the premises. Notwithstanding the enchantment of the visit, the price of € 7 per adult seems us excessive.

  • This Chapel designed by Matisse is a disconcerting beauty. Small in size but huge by the sensations it provides. See without moderation

  • The little chapel is visible across the river from Vence, standing out from it's traditional neighbours. It is a short (10 min.) walk across the bridge from the town. This is the most crisp, minimalis...  more »

  • Beautiful and tranquil place to pray/reflect and meditate. Combination of colours and shapes create a calm and soothing atmosphere.
  • While Matisse was a master of minimalism, this chapel takes it to the extreme. Beside a couple painted walls, there isn't much of Matisse here. Not worth the price of admission. There is a good view of Vence though from the garden.
  • Amazing to visit
  • I think photography should be allowed bearing in mind the admission charge
  • the simplicity and love that Mattise put into this work of art, hold a special place in my mind forever. What a beautiful experience along our tour of artist homes.
