Chateau d'Aguilar, Tuchan
(3.9/5 based on 50+ reviews on the web)
The Château d'Aguilar is a 12th-century castle, one of the so-called Cathar castles, located in the commune of Tuchan in the Aude département of France.ArchitectureThe design of the castle witnesses the practical military thinking of the 12th century. The castle consists of an inner keep built in the 12th century, surrounded by an outer pentagonal fortification from the 13th century. This fortification is oriented such that its point guards the side most favourable to attackers. The keep and the inner hexagonal fortification is flanked at each corner with semi-circular guard towers, each equipped with archery outlooks. The strategic location of the castle on a hill overhanging the plain of Tuchan allows supervision of the corbières. Despite this, the castle is easily accessible from the plains because of its relatively low elevation of 321 metres. There is a small underground chapel of Saint-Anne below the keep.HistoryThe earliest building at this location belonged to the count of Fonnollède since 1021. In the 13th century, the keep that had replaced earlier buildings was bequeathed by the viscounts of Carcassonne to their vassal, the Ternes. In 1210, it was invaded and occupied by Simon de Montfort, whose soldiers took and held the owner Raymond de Termes in a dark dungeon in the Carcassonne. Militarily, the castle lay dormant for the next 30 years, until Raymond's son Oliver de Termes took back the castle in the brief revolt against the crusaders. Aguilar became the refuge of many faydits, Cathar knights and lords without strongholds. In 1246, a royal garrison was installed to supervise the Aragon frontier.

  • Very interesting Cathar Castle, beautiful and with a structure rather well preserved. Less dizzying than the other nearby castles, it is no less worth because is in addition to those more known. Access by car a bit delicate because very narrow road, but it still passes. Interesting explanations. Only caveat: the real opening that do not necessarily match those announced on the internet.

  • This castle is one of the smallest we visited among the Cathar castles. It is accessible by a narrow and winding road in full vines, climbing rapidemenent to the assault of the Castle. We meet in the car at the level of some extensions on the road, or to do reverse. The castle is on a promontory, it is feared to have lots to walk (especially summer days), but fortunately a car park behind the castle can get there on foot in 5 min! The entry on the parking ticket is relatively expensive. (€5) The visit in it even is fairly short, the Castle being small. There is some work in progress. The interest comes mainly from this romantic feeling to be alone in the ruins, perched above the Valley with a magnificent panorama of the Corbières. The omnipresent wind and Sun reinforces this atmosphere!

  • We enjoyed the written explanations to be didactic. It's a good complement to the chaateaux best known as Queribus and Peyrepertuse, just next door.

  • Needs some work. But another example of man's defensive efforts and resourcefulness in an ancient landscape
  • Very accessible castle, certainly in a State lower than on the other but very authentic. A more animated medieval at the top too good for kids as for parents, and for a small fee
