  • We visited this Museum in 2017, the regiments of Hussars, several country costumes, costume pictures beautiful as there are many in major museums. In addition it is located in the beautiful setting of the Massey garden that houses. A visit not to be missed if you go through Tarbes.

  • Although it was the botanist Placide Massey (1777 – 1853), as the Jardin Massey is named after, who began the construction of the Musée Massey, today it is almost unfair to Museum not here Musée Jubinal, for collection of works of art here is largely due to Achille Jubinal (1810-1875), art lover and Mayor of Bagnères-de-Bigorre slightly South of Tarbes. Jubinal worked tirelessly to create a collection of works of art at an international level, which should be for the benefit of the region's citizens. In 1864 the Musée Massey opened the doors to the public. The collection of pictures hanging in the Museum's upper floor, primarily in two large halls. The works are hung a bit randomly so that both styles and national schools are mixed. But because the collection is not so great, it doesn't matter. Here is Dutch, Italian, Spanish and French works by Bernardo Strozzi, among others, Carlo Francesco Nuvolone, Sebastian Vrancx, Hans Vredeman de Vries, Donato of Brescia, Paul de Vos, Jan Gossaert, Alonso Cano, Garofolo, Mario Balassi, Juan Montero de Roxas, Giacinto Brandi, François-Pierre-Charles Lapostolet, Charles Barry, Bernard Gosselin, Henri Saintin and Domenico Zampieri. Two of the Museum's real treasures are Jacopo da Pontormos image of Christ which is tied around the hands and so Maurice Utrillos picture of Cathédrale Notre-Dame-de-la-Sède. Utrillo visited Tarbes in 1935 and painted a wonderful picture of the city's Cathedral in snowy weather as seen from the north side with the small space with trees on. To my very great annoyance we had packed Utrillos image in the archive, and it was not possible to get to experience the work. How can it happen! The Musée Massey owns a picture of Utrillo as is malt in Tarbes is a local attaktion. It can be not just pack away, so the Museum's customers can't welcome this wonderful work! The explanation they gave me was that since there was set up a temporary exhibition where contemporary pictures were hung among the classic works of Mestre, then had some of the pictures from the permanent exhibition, of course, be temporarily in the archive. But why Utrillos image?? I had to comfort me with to buy a poster of the image. I have been framed, so now I can welcome the fine image at home. The Department of the history of hussarerne and their history can be found on the ground floor of the Musée Massey. You'll probably be very interested in the topic in order to live a very long time in this part of the House and look at the uniforms and much more. Here are also paintings by, among others, Ernest Meissonier, Gaston Guignard and Ange-Louis Janet, images that produces battle scenes and cavalry. The Musée Massey is wonderfully located in Jardin Massey Tarbes, charming city park, which has its own reviews here on TripAdvisor.

  • Good
  • Nice place
  • The Museum, located in a magnificent building in the middle of a garden just as sumptuous, is divided into two collections: the Museum of the Hussars and the Museum of fine arts. The Museum of fine arts is more fun than anything else (many clumsy works and/or a little kitsch), it is especially the Hussars Museum which is worth to be visited for its collection of impressive colorful costumes! The visit is short but pleasant.
